What is going on with all the Duotone shots? Does it make it "arty"?I am all in favor of using duotones for creating a mood, emphasizing textures or other purposes, but I think some of us are using it to much. whats up with that? I have shot plenty of B&W on film, I never had a color darkroom. But really! B&W has its place, I think it worked well in the Black on black challenge, some of the Night on the town shots where excellent in duotone but IMO the best Night on the town shot was ruined because of duotones.
Sorry if I offended anyone but I needed to say that.

I guess it's just another flavour of the week. But I'm as guilty as anyone as I've used it on a few of my entries.

I have a current philosophy about B&W and colour:
Any colour in the photo must serve a purpose. If it's not needed, I'll do B&W instead. Or selective desaturation. This makes me REALLY think about colour.
I'm not saying everyone should do this all the time, but it is helping me at the moment. |

Mark - you weren't here, so I'll explain.
See, we had a color challenge.
Then a few weeks later, a members primary colors challenge.
Then the same week an open secondary colors challenge.
Then the next week a members complementary colors challenge.
I swear if some of us had to shoot a 'color' shot again, we'd have freaked. If you saw the winners for the 2 challenges after that, NONE of the 6 were anything but b/w and duotone. Then we had a duotone challenge...*sigh*
People are learning - they are experimenting and often they are choosing the same things. Some of my better shots were duotones and yes, it does add mood, age, timelessness, anything you want like that.
What does your color add?

It may just be coincidence, but three of my top four scoring images on my profile are BW. Two of them were ribbon winners. I like color just as much as anyone, but my best scores have come sans color. Every other entry I have over a 6.0 (13 of them) is in color...
