With the new year's arrival, I decided to do some comparitive analysis of my scores to see if there was any noticeable improvement since I joined DPC. Often times it does not feel as it my score or rankings are really improving. But said analysis is quite revealing:
2004:
Avg - 4.67 (32%)
2005
Avg - 4.85 (29%)
Approximately a 0.2 increase in my score. But a 3% drop in percentile ranking. Not all that impressive.

But if I compare the first half of 2005 against the second half of 2005 there is a noticeable difference, albeit a slight at 0.13, but this shows that the second half of 2005 shows a 1/4 pt increase over 2004's avg score.
2005: (1st Half)
Avg - 4.79 (26%)
2005: (2nd Half)
Avg - 4.92 (34%)

I decided to look a little deeper, so I broke up the second half of 2005 into quarters. Of interest, there was actually a decline in avg score in the 3rd quarter but a corresponding increase in percentile. (I believe that some challenge topics have lower "scoring ranges" and thus percentile is often a better measurement of place IMHO. (In fact, it is three particular entries that pulled my 3rd quarter down from a would be 5.08)
2005: (3rd Quarter)
Avg - 4.69 (30%)
2005: (4th Quarter)
Avg - 5.15 (38%)
But now we something interesting in the 4th Quarter results. A marked increase in score, nearly 1/2 a point increase over the 3rd Quarter. As well as a significantly higher percentile placement.
In fact, if I compare the recent 4th Quarter results to 2004 we can see noticeable marked improvement.
So although it can feel like I've made very little progress, a deeper analysis shows that I am indeed improving. I am quite looking forward to 2006. And it is my hope that I will bring my average steadily over into the 5.0 mark.
I just thought I'd share this with all of you who are discouraged with your scores and progress.

| Interesting, Ive wanted to comapre my scores but Im lazy. I wonder if they've (D&L) thought about breaking averages into years. I think its a helpful statistic. |

This led me to look at my vast array of entries...I have only been a member since October (and shooting since then really), but since then my scores have went...
4.0
4.597
5.6
4.494 (stupid me submitting just to submit)
5.8563 (current colors score and subject to change)
I am extremely glad I joined DPC. I can clearly see my shots improving.

27 challenges in 2005 (ending with Mother)
Score av. 5.0214
% av. 45.37%
Not to bad I suppose
Can't do 1st and 2nd half comparison. Only been entering challenges since Aug.

ok, since I havent been her long, 4 months, I just split mine in half.
First 2 months: Average score: 4.823, 36%
Last 2 months: Average score: 5.294, 54% |

I've always wondered about this after seeing Scalvert do it for his first 50 challenges. I haven't done 50 yet (33), but here is first half vs. second half...
First 17: 5.9076
Second 16: 6.3001
I really do feel like my technique has improved in the six months I've been here. I've learned lots, including PS skills, and don't feel like I've just learned "what the voters want". |

10 months
5.515 and 61%
but i see patterns in the scores, very saw toothed
times when i'm busy with "real life" & don't have time for entries
& times that i try harder ... very low in the summer time |

I went ahead and calculated my stats...cause I'm bored.
I've entered 30 challenges so far:
First 10:
Avg score - 4.5928
Average percentage - 36.3%
# of Favs - 2
# of comments - 99
Second 10:
Avg Score - 5.4149
Avg percentage - 51.5%
# of favs - 5
# of comments - 124
Third 10:
Avg score - 5.7321
Avg percentage - 59%
# of favs - 17
# of comments - 193
Well...now that I look at it, I have improved a whole lot since joining...

How long of a time period do those 30 challenges spread over Stare_at_the_sun ?

Haha...I think I've missed a few challenges, but not many.
I doubt I'll have an entry for the singled out challenge this week...
