I've heard rumours that the cable release for the N80 also works on the D100 but I want to be sure. Any ideas what make/model/price I should be looking for in a cable release?

Just about any modern threaded manual release will work with the D100, so yes the same unit that wil work with the N80 will work. Nikon's version is the AR-3 seen here at B&H, but I wouldn't spend $17 for it. Go to a local camera store & you should be able to get one for less than $5.

edit to add to be sure to get one with a lock so you can use longer bulb exposures.
