Is "civil" the opposite of "tacky"? I might be in trouble, as I'm often tacky.
I'll try to behave from now on & will only give out nice comments.

I, although in favour of civility do not appreciate the idea of Big Brother watching over you
I thought we were all adults and if some one is misbehaving we could deal with it with out the involvement of the SC or a higher power dictating how one should behave
PLEASE do not get me wrong i am NOT in favour of insulting or aggressiveness

one of the issues lately has been exactly that: individuals trying to "deal with it" without notifying the SC. the problem is that the "dealings" that have gone on have been less than diplomatic and have degraded into tit-for-tat attacks on persons and their character.
i also do not enjoy an air of big brother watching over. that is not what is being proposed. what we do request is that if you feel you are being spoken to in an improper manner, you point it out to those that have the authority to do something about it.
our goal here is to make the forums a fun place for everyone to play. |

I hope that this does not curtail logger head debates - the disparate nature of the participants here makes politics an interesting discussion.
I have studiously tried to avoid any name calling or goading, though I have seen it occur (and experienced it) in some otherwise civil, if polarised, debates [please let me know if the perception is otherwise].
Otherwise I support the enforcement of civility and good etiquette.

That approach hasn't been very effective thus far. When one member tries to rein in another, it's usually taken as a personal attack and the tirade just escalates. This is exactly what we'd like to prevent. If you feel that someone is out of line, just report your concern rather than taking the matter into your own hands and potentially making situation worse (and sometimes the best response is no response). |

For those looking for smileys, you can go here
They have some really darling ones. You can save them to your computer, then to a site like photobucket or wherever, and then just place the link here!
Here is one I was going to use in the future for duels seen in forums :)
Hopefully and finally now this smiley probably won't be used for that! YEAH!!
Sorry for the LONG URL. I think I messed up when inserting that link, but I think its ok :)

This initial post is needed. I sometimes read threads and notice that some parties simply do not think before they talk. Look, we never fail to make a fool of ourselves when we talk stupid. In casual, unrecorded conversation much will pass because it is usually forgotten but here in the forums you are recording yourselves. Many will reread and judge your capacity for interaction along with the import(weight or shallowness of your remarks) if you chose a high profile by being combative. There really is no room for such behaviour.
I also notice that some parties read certain post and take immediate offense. They act as if the poster has just driven a javalin in their leg and instead of confronting the idea they resort to personal attacks.
The above practice is very primitive. Of course, we all react according to our temperement but any group endeavour requires a certain amount of restraint otherwise the main point is lost as it is being hyjacked by the burst of emotions.
Legalbeagle, Scalvert, Kirbic, BearMusic rise as roadmodels. They discuss topics from the mundane to the controversial but maintain a steady restraint in their expression. It is that some are too eager to deliver a deadly blow and when they can't they attack the poster.
I come from the school that any topic can be debated without allowing emotions to cloud the issue. How else can we progress? Anybody can talk about anything and it is easy to derail any meaningful conversation by behaving mean.
Yes, the initial posting should be observed and those that break the code should answer. You have a right to be thoughtful, vapid or stupid provided you maintain an equilibrium of respect for all participants.

Dan - I don't think much really has changed. It's just a friendly reminder to everyone to play nice with an 'Administrator Announcements' stamp of authority on it. ;^)
Try to remember the golden rule of "treating others as you would have them treat you" (not always easy when emotions take over...). The only thing we can control is ourselves. As for having it "spelled out somewhere", I don't know that that's possible. Kind of like trying to pin down what exactly is removing a major element in the editing rules. ;^)

If you feel that a SC member is acting out of line, feel free to report the post the same way you would for any other user. I know some people have the impression that we have a buddy buddy club but the truth is, we have no problem pointing out to each other how we could have done better (and frequently ask each other for feedback as well). I personally welcome PMs about any issues people have with me (civily written, please) and I suspect the other SC feel the same way.
We're working on getting it spelled out somewhere. Hang in there. ;) |

While the Golden Rule is a lovely (and valid) concept by and large, I've always thought it was fundamentally flawed, and the flaw can be especially obvious in forums like ours; some people LIKE to be combative and tie it on with others, and actually enjoy acting out...
Still, your point's well taken.

Re: Megatherian's question regarding "consistent enforcement", long experience in moderating large forums has taught me that the best approach, usually, is for moderators to "warn" transgressors, and only take such extreme measures as suspension or banning after repeated warnings go unheeded. I would not expect to see a rash of heavy-handed enforcement of this code of conduct. I would not consider it evidence of favoritism if isolated breaches of the code appeared to go unpunished; such warnings are usually more effective if made privately. Transgressors called out on their behavior in public often lash back in public, and a downward spiral ensues.

Well if you found the post "annoying" perhaps you could have her fined $2,000 and sent to jail ;) |
