I can't decide between:
Nikkor 300mm f/4 AFS
D200
105 f/2.8 macro
just thought I'd share my dilemma.

Do you need a second body or another lens? Or is want the operative word, hence the dilemma? |

heh...I don't need any of the three...
the 105 micro is probably the least likely purchase being that I'm not into macro photography, and if I need to shoot at 105 2.8, I'll use the 80-200 and just not focus closer than 6 feet.
I was thinking of pursuing some wildlife photography, hence the 300mm...but I don't think 300 would be enough to be completely honest. I may just need a 500 f/4.
Yes I would like to retire the d70 to backup status. I would have a use for using the d200 and throwing the d70 over the shoulder...not to mention the viewfinder on the d200 (bigger than that of the d2x, and WAY bigger than that of the d70) would allow for some nice pinpoint manual focusing for headshots...something my d70 doesn't really allow me to do.

I say get the lens you want now - by the time you save the $$ to buy a new body they will just be that much better a value.

I actually am leaning more and more toward that option the more I think about it.

that's the most expensive of avenues...besides, I enjoy the dark side.

Canon IS the darkside!
You don't hear Simon and Garfunkle singing about Canon do you ;-)

have all three (almost, just a 300mm f/4 AF no -S)
i really really like the D200 _ but i moved up from D100
the 105 f2.8 was my first "bought new" lens and is always in my bag and one of my most used lenses ,,,
i very rarely use the 300mm
but it depends on what you shoot ... i'm a inside /macro person so for me the 105 was a no brainer (and the 300 was dumb)
D200 i wouldn't do without now ;)

well I keep going back and forth...I think the smart thing to do is wait...
I still enjoy my d70 very much so...I don't find it lacking in any areas except the viewfinder size and for some things, I find 3 fps just a bit slow.
I think the smart thing to do would be the d200 as I feel that will help generate more income for me, personally, than the 300mm...I think the 300mm is just a personal want and not a business decision at this point...although if a nice price on a used 300 popped up I'd strongly consider that option as well.
--
Anyway, I decided to try and find a reason to send my d70 in for service so I would basically have to get the d200. Lately, I noticed it seems to backfocus a little bit (but enough) on headshots to throw the focus a bit infront of the subject's eyes...Now I realize that it's just bad technique on some of the shots (I must be catching part of the nose in the AF spot or something)...here's my test conducted tonight in an attempt to find that error lol...of course I used bad light because that's where AF systems seem to struggle...taken with an 85 at 1.8...
As you can see, no focus issues. Oh well, I have time.
