I understand it was not a shot of motherhood but the challenge did not say motherhood it said mother (no - ! , no - ?) and no details. I’m not complaining because this was the biggest rush I have had taking a picture and dangerous. I know it’s a little noisy but I had the ISO bumped up from a previous shoot and didn’t have time to adjust setting. This was one of those picture you only have a few seconds to take.

Did the voters feel it was to far out of the box? I didn’t because I think we all have heard of Mother Nature. I also don’t think my title was leading.

Please help me in finding out what failed in this picture.

Too far outside the box for this crowd. It's a nice picture, and didn't bomb completely, but was too far afield of the way the challenge was popularly interpreted.

left you a comment. I like it a lot (added it to my favs!), but it's not surprising that some thought it was a stretch for the theme.

There's some pretty horrible cloning down there in the lower left of the photo. other than that, I'd have to say it was just the out of the box theme. looking at the photo, I would automatically think 'weather', not 'mother'.
Just a note, I did not vote.

I thought it was a good one. Got a 7 from me. I fell victim to the same syndrome; 1-word challenge, wide open (I thought) to broader concepts of motherhood. It is often said by poets and such that "The sea is the mother of us all" so I went out to shoot an image to that idea. Worked hard on a composition that would be mostly sea but "bridge" to land, and I ended up damned near last with 60 votes of 3 or less:

So it goes...

Robt.

I think it was just a little too out of the box for all the members...I really liked it! I think it's a great capture! How lucky you are to capture an image that extreme! That's my next goal! I don't see the trees, but I believe you on that...scary!

I don't know about the "out of the box" thing, but the picture does not say "mother". Without the title it would be hard to think of mother or motherhood when just looking at it.

But a picture hasn't "failed" just because it doesn't score well here ....

it seems sort of funny that so many people felt the need to have a looser definition of the challenge to foster "out of the box" thinking and our first one word challenge is more punative towards lateral thinking than any challenge in recent memory. The single word mother must draw to mind and attractive female with an infant. The definitions we have had in the past limit some people, but they expand the idea to others and tend to create a commmon ground.

Thanks everyone. Like I said I'm not upset but felt a one word challenge with no description offered up more interpretation. Thanks for everyone that voted and commented and offered your opinion in this thread.
