Moved for the higher ups. I want to know what the difference is?
REX...the ipod discussion was hidden by site council since it was considered by the majority of voting sc members to be spam which had no relevance to DPC or photography.
What?
How many times do we not talk photography? How many times do I see in a signature about microstock sites? Smugmug? Which is in my profile. If that thread should be hidden then so should all the signatures about all this other stuff getting referals.

For the record (since you're quoting me), I was not part of the discussion, nor did I hide the thread. I do however support the decision of the SC and would have voted same.
We have in the past hidden these types of threads when drawn to our attention. If some have slipped by us, then my apologies, feel free to use the report post feature if there is a thread which you feel would be considered spam.
We have allowed photography related 'spam' on occation when it is relevant to the purpose of the site. For example a post directing members to sales, deals, or other photography related info.
Click here so I can get a free T-shirt or whatever, isn't appropriate for our forums.
Regarding forums signatures, this is why they are able to be hidden.
Edit to add, this particular post was reported to SC as spam, a vote was done, and action was taken.
I hope this answers your questions. ~Heather~

I've definitely seen a lot of "non photography" threads before. Gotta love the censorship here.

We monitor threads. This is our 'house' so to speak. We give you your own little private 'rooms' (signatures, portfolios etc) what you do with that space is your business, what you do with our space is our business.
In other words, we try not to monitor your personal space unless it's just downright offensive.
To the best of my knowledge we have not removed or edited any signatures, so if you want to spam your site, your business, or your mom (whatever ruffels your feathers), feel free to do so in your signature.
*shrug* I guess that's all. lol

Discuss non photography related issues all you want, but 'spam' is an offense of our TOS and will be removed as we see fit. |

Rex,
Your post was hidden because it was a commercial advertisement AND was unrelated to photography.
We allow considerable latitude on the advertising/spam rule when the post is either related to photography or of a charitable nature (of course, this applies to established users only; threads from users who sign up just to spam the sites are deleted and their accounts removed). Since your post was an advertisement and was not photography- or charity-related, it was removed.
I hope this explains our position better.
~Terry

Oh good grief...it was an analogy, which was why it was in quotes. You know darn good and well what i meant, why try to start something? |

Wasn't my post. The one that posted it has been a member here for a while. And no it doesn't explain the issue better. So if I were to start a thread and put in a link to click and save $ at a photo site that is not spam but if it is save $ at a music store it is spam.
Makes no sense.

Then let me clarify, that it was just an analogy. I wasn't trying to play god...just the best way I could explain it. i thought about using 'cookies' as an example, since I love cookies, but couldn't think of a good cookie analogy...my apologies. |

Probably a nightclub or a bar would be a better analogy.
Both might charge you a cover to get in, but that doesn't mean that you can go in and do whatever you want. If you start a fight, for example, you'll get kicked out. They might ask you to leave if you're doing something that's annoying other patrons. Some even have a dress code.
Though this analogy is probably also imperfect, my point is that we have a responsibility to the community as a whole to make sure that everyone (or as close to everyone as possible) has an enjoyable experience. While one spam thread might not seem like that big a deal, they tend to multiply quickly. Imagine how mush less valuable our forums would be if half or more of the threads on the front page were spam, and you'll understand why we had to lock the thread.

It wasn't locked....it was hidden. Lock it I don't care but hiding it is different. I might want the link?

yup that is exactly what you did. Last time i checked membership was not stock in the site. It did not give you the right to dictate how D&L run the place.
If you buy a membership to Sams Club, does that give you the right to set up a booth in a sam's club store to hock your wares? I don't think so.
I really don't understand why people thing private property rules don't apply to the internet as they do to rl situations. |

I meant to say hidden. Hiding is our standard response for non-permissible spam/advertising, as it removes any incentive for anyone to post it. If we only locked them, people would spam anyway, knowing that their posts would remain on the front page for at least an hour or two.
If you want the link you are always welcome to PM the original poster directly. I'm sure he'll be happy to provide it.

He was a member here. I could understand a newly registered user or member. But he has been here for awhile.
And to think I was almost ready to renew then I see there is a double standard. Photography spam and ipod spam are both still spam no matter what the subject. If any threads were created in this fashion then it is only right IMO to go back and delete every one of them.

Please... obviously some people have a problem with they things are handled. The only reason I even said anything is the fact that I have seen other threads on here that had absolutely nothing to do with photography.
You are confusing the issue here. I stated that it was a terrible analogy, and that it is.
She already agreed that it was a poor analogy...and it was left at that.

| Dude, this is a photo site. People discussing photo sites is well within the bounds of this site. People selling other crap is for the other crap sites... What is so difficult about this concept? |
