I have looked this over through 14 pages of threads and I can't seem to find the info I'm looking for.

I am trying to decide if the Kenko extension tubes can match the performance of a true macro lens? With the Sigma 105mm going for less than $400.00 and highly recommended by many users here it just makes me wonder which will give me the superior image.

Things I'm considering. Can I get a large DOF with the extension tubes? I plan to use them with a tamron 28-75mm and a 50mm 1.8 II. Light is not really a problem since I have 2 580ex and 4 Alien Bees. This will be used mostly for stock photography so I need the best possible sharpness and DOF I can capture.

Any help, esp examples, would be great. TIA!

You cant get a large depth of field using extention tubes (i cant anyway), you also might find that you have to use AF. As for quality I dont see anything wrong with them.

btw I mainly use mine on the 50 1.4 and dont have any problem with light

The way I understand it is to get 1:1 on a 50mm lens you need to have 50mm of extension tubes attached. I just started putting extension tubes on a macro lens. I get about 3:1.

edit: also using a 1.4 tele

IMO
i'd take a macro lens over extension tubes(& bellows) any day
BUT extension tubes can attach to lenses (that are not macro) to give better reach (i.e. 200mm & 300mm ) and make them macro roughly 1:3 on a 200mm
bellows with a shorter length (30-50) can go to greater than life size ans i have yet to see a bellows that will comunicate to the camera (nikon specific..)

but a dedicated macro had better flat field characteristics and is designed to do the job ....
