I am fairly new to photography and I have more than a passing interest in portraiture. I will be setting up a small home studio in my basement in the winter and in my garage in the summer (more room, higher ceiling). My question is, would continous lighting be easier to learn with since you can see the shadows while you do your set-up or would strobes be better using the built in model lamps and a light meter.

Strobes

Unless you want to dig up a set of the braces they used to make people wear to hold them still while their photo was being taken.
