When I was choosing degree courses for engineering, everyone here was so helpful, there seem to be a fair few engineers around. Now I'm beginning to plan a gap year before uni... I'll want to get some typical travelling/voluntary work, at least in one of the summers, but it would be great to get some work experience in engineering for the majority of the year. I've applied for an internship type thing with ove arup but am aware this is gonna be pretty competitive, so would like other options.
I will be wanting to work anything between 3 and 12 mths, between june2006 - sept2007. I will be starting a MEng either in Engineering (oxford uni) or mechanical eng w/ spanish (sheffield) in sept/oct 07. I have conditional offers for both of these but havent yet decided which i prefer.
My main interests in engineering are sustainability issues, and also energy (esp renewables). I expect that whatever course i do I'll tend towards mechanical. But I would be happy to work in any area of engineering because I ultimately want broad experience.
I'm happy to work pretty much anywhere, so long's language isn't a problem (i speak english and have reasonable(?) level of spanish). Latin America's always appealed to me but UK/europe mught be more practical :-p. Salary would have to cover travel and living expenses, but I would consider forking out my own money if the cause was charitable. hmmmm think that gives you a good idea of what i'm looking for
Does anyone have any useful contacts for me? organizations, charities, individuals that might offere me that kind of experience.
thanks for any feedback
kirsty
edit: I'll be 17 when I start gap yr, turning 18 at the start of november if this is relevant

oooooh, i've never looked at the international site. But EWB has been a big consideration for choosing unis - i only considered those with an EWB (UK) branch. So thanks for the link...I definitely plan to work with ewb in uni hols, but i thought i wouldnt be able to pre-uni. I'll check it out anyway, cheers
anyone else?
ps - spazmo, have you worked with ewb??

No, but I wish I had known about it when I was in school. My university wasn't involved with EWB and I basically never heard about it until after I had graduated had gotten married and was well entrenched in the corporate life. I have since read quite a bit about some of their projects and I like what they are doing. Solar power, water purification/wells, revenue generation etc for remote villages that sort of thing. Reading your post, it was just the first thing that popped into my mind. Good Luck!

fluor corp has an excellent internship program here in the states however I do not know anything of the UK practices
Fluor Corp
they are strongly footed in refi/petrochem but are know in various industries as food/pharm, power etc. If your interest is mech eng from an industrial and not mfg area they would be a good fit. I do not know any contacts in the UK but if you are interested in work with Fema/Katrina project I could pass along a name for you to get in touch with. |

I did an MEng Eur at Bristol Univeristy (with an Erasmus year in Vienna, Austra). Finished it with a 1st class Hons - thankfully.
I did an internship with Sir Robert McAlpine, who gave me sponsorship through the course also. My colleagues did internships at firms such as Kier Group, Thames Water, Balfour Beatty, Ove Arup.
Don't know if it still exists, but back in 1997 there was a book called the Construction Industry Handbook which gave a list of all the engineering employers. I basically sent letters (as email didn't really exist back then) to almost all of them. I got about 20 replies and picked what I thought was the best one.
