Was reading a thread and someone brought up the Mother challenge. Someone else said that a "Man is not a mother". No, I'm not picking on the member.. the reply got me to thinking though.
What to you, defines a Mother?
I ask because I have a friend who is both Mother and Father to his son. So, does Mother only mean women/females? Can someone be called Mother only if she has given birth? Or is a Mother someone who nurtures, protects and cares for you? Couldn't that be a Dad too though?
So I repeat, what to you, defines a Mother?

I think that anyone can 'mother' someone. I take care of my two children, and since I'm married and together with my husband, technically, that makes me the mother.
However, if the parent is a single father, then he has to be both mother and father to his child(ren), just like a single mother has to be both for hers.
I also tend to 'mother' the people that I work with. I asked a woman that I work with last night (everytime I see her eat it's only fruit and chips) if she ever eats real food like say, meat for instance to make sure she gets the protein that she needs in her diet. The woman is in her 40's.
I guess it all depends on your personal definition of mother, but as you can see, mine is wide open. :D |

I agree with Princess, however, for the challenge many people I am sure have a clear cut visual in their mind of the word mother and its more common meanings. I think had one posted a photo of a man, the title would have to represent it to make it in voting, i.e. "single parent", etc. Then it would be more accepted challenge wise. However, I feel in the "challenge" entry aspect I think the more simple and to the point are the photos that win more often than not. A photo that is dead on for most visuals on what the challenge description and title means; good technically as can be givin whatever editing rules; and overall appeal of subject matter. I personally would not have voted down a man being portrayed as a mother, but I don't think it would have faired as well as what the general concensus would find more appealing.
