I was wondering if one has to ask permission to link to a website? I do plan on asking permission to do so from the sites I've chosen but what if there is no way to contact the administrator? Would not be taking content but would actually give the propsed sites more traffic.(Possibly).

I can see no reason why you would need permission. You can link to whichever sites you want.

If your not using any of their content (or something like thumbnail logos as a clickable link), then you really have no reason to ask to link to a site. You may want to tell the site that you are linking to them, but it's not something you have to do.

The only exception to this I can think of would be if you have a major directory type site and if google will likely not accept your site - then linking will actually hurt their search rankings. If it's just a small compilation of links, I'm sure they will be happy.

| Ive emailed about a dozen sites so far requesting permission to link to there sites. So far Ive heard from Alan Briot and he said it was cool. I do wonder about the google comment. Ill have to look into what they will accept. |

it's done here and on other forums all the time.
I have seen links on websites in the middle of articles and reviews.

Yes and no. Some sites request that linking be done only to main page, others don't say anything. (Normally this is done because article/whatever, is not on a permanent page yet.)
