I have a canon 580ex and occasionally I use it off camera to paint in light on various subjects i.e.

When off camera I use the Pilot light switch. The strength of the flash is very weak when using the pilot switch and I have to use several bursts.
Is there such a thing as an adapter that can be secured to the base of the flash so that I can trigger it to obtain a more powerful flash?

Or do I purchase a cheaper flash unit to obtain the results?

Thanks in advance.

I assume you're doing this with the flash still in ETTL mode?

Put it in manual mode, and set the power you want. (ie push the mode button till the display shows 'M')

In ETTL the Pilot button gives you 1/64th power.

Cheers, Me.
