I was reading this article //www.nikondigital.org/articles/white_balance.htm on white balance adjustments. The guy states that AWB should never be used and he recommends setting to cloudy-3 because this is closer to actual daytime color temp than the AWB calculates.
My question is how do I get cloudy-3 on a Rebel XT to try this? I know how to set cloudy. What about the -3.

I don't know if you can -- Nikon has the option to fine tune any of the WB settings, just set it and dial the adjustment. This is much like using exposure compensation or a flash bias. Sorry to send you to your manual, but it will be the best source to find if your camera allows WB adjustments in the same manner. I would download and check myself (I'm curious now, so please report back), but I'm on my way to work. :(

/edit: this is of course, unless I've been missreading my manual -- could happen as I haven't gotten all the way thru it yet.

he is probably talking about minus -3 contrast

Other sources say that AWB is your best option, unless you have mixed light situations. Stating 90% accuracy.
This may be a camera specific setting that he is speaking of. Canon and Nikons WB adjustments may be different. My D70 manual has a WB Kelvin Temp listed for each (+) and (-) adustment. I wouldn't take one articles word for everything, wither. That was illustrating one picture. Works for him, fine.
Shoot RAW and use a WB card if you don't want to worry about it that much.

Canon 20D allows you to set WB by degrees Kelvin, very precisely. 350xt does not have this option. 350xt does have a custom WB function, and you can set that custom WB intoone of your partameter sets I think, so that might work. 350xt also allows you to bracket WB, and to fine-tune the bracketing as to which colors it shifts towards. Your manual wille explain. However, this increases the number of exposures you have to take. Your best solution is to shoot RAW and set WB in the RAW converter. Alternatively you can shoot RAW+JPG in auto WB, and if the JPG does not look good you can run the RAW conversion for that particular image.

In my experience Canon's WB is exceptionally good anyway. I have found little need to mess around with it for general usage.
