I am thinking of going on vacation, it will either be Myrtle Beach, Atlantic City or Las Vegas (depends on how much cash I will have).
I just moved up to the world of DSLR from Fuji S5000, and never had to make these choices before.
Say, just for sake of discussion I wont want to take the whole camera bag, and my bag currently consist of (and I wont have the cash for anymore equipment):
Nikon D50
SB600 Speed Light
50mm F1.8
Both 18-55 and 55-200 Nikon Kit lens
Ultra 2 Plus 1gb card
Lexar 512 card.
Ok, having said that, if you could only take one lens, what would it be? Im thinking of taking the whole bag, but I wont carry it around with me, its one of those annoying shoulder bags. I wish I had gone with a back pack style, but right now, its not in the budget to buy a new one (This is only a week old) |

I would take the 18-55. In all those places you're more likely to want wide angle shots but you still have some coverage for a portrait in fromt of a landmark etc. |

OK, out of all that equiptment, I'd only bring the camera of course, the 18-55 and 55-22 and the memory cards. You won't use the 50mm or the flash. Just my humble opnion.

Hmmm,
Varied opinions. I asked this in another forum and they say only the 50.
I should say, this trip would be a solo trip, just me, so no portraits.
Thanks for the replies guys.
Steve
PS: Id prob take the whole bag and carry just one lens on the body, who knows.
I will check all replies as soon as I can. Im internet disabled at home (as in, no net at home), so I check at the library every day or 2. Sorry if there is a delay in my reponse. |

"Myrtle Beach, Atlantic City or Las Vegas (depends on how much cash I will have)."
Where and why make a big difference. If you're planning to get photos of the ocean or the grand canyon, then definitely take the 55-200. But if you are planning to get the indoor shots of casino fun (why anyone wants to give vast amounts of money away to make someone else richer ceases to be understood by me) which it sounds like as if that is the case seeing as at least 2 out of 3 of those are "gambling" places. But anyways, if you want to capture the big "life" action, and architecture, etc. Than take the 18-55mm.
My inclination, take both and leave one or the other at the hotel. Keep the 18-55 as your walk-around. But if you know you're heading to see the Canyon or what not, bring the 55-200mm.
And well, who knows, if you do well at the casinos you can always by a Rebel XT (very compact DSLR) and the Canon 28-300mm. ;) |

Just the camera and the 18-55 if you want to travel light.
Everything, if you don't mind carrying a few stuff.

Spend a few bucks and buy this sling bag:
Tamrac Velocity 7
It will hold your camera and both the 18-55 & 55-200 and is easy to carry. I use it when I'm traveling and it works well.
As a side note I just ordered this lens for traveling when I don't want to carry my better glass.

If you go to Vegas, definitely take the f/1.8 50mm lens, you'll get the fast aperture for night shots, and 50mm lenses have give crisp pictures, which is a bonus in shooting night shots.
If you go to Vegas, why would you even be awake during the day? |

If it's solo highly unlikely you will use the external flash, bring the 50mm 1.8 instead.

When I was in Vegas last month, the night pictures came out lovely with the 50mm 1.8 lens, I didn't really need to use the flash. However, I did have to step back quite a few times to 'fit' all the picture into the frame. |

With reagrds to the Vegas nightshots. I was there back in April with my D70. My bag consisted of the 18-70kit, 50mmF1.8, 70-300mm Sigma, SB800 - spent 6 weeks in USA visiting many locations.
Anyway, in Vegas I pretty much only used the 18-70 to get the wide-angle needed to include the whole buildings. I would constantly prop against a pole or fence to compensate for the long shutter speeds. The result was some really nice shots. For example, at Bellagio I sat the camera on a concrete pillar and got some great fountain shots at the 11pm shows. I doubt the 50mm would have given the required shutter speed anyway - let alone the wide angle needed. |

Invest in a travel (lightweight) tripod! I bought the Sunpak DigiPro Compact S, and it's so small and lightweight, it's no problem to carry around all the time. I don't think it's built to last forever, but it would be a great thing to have when walking around a city where you want to get some nice night shots.
Here's the URL and B&H. I think I bought mine at Amazon or somewhere for a bit less (and it's not too expensive anyway)

By the way, I think you should bring all your lenses other than the 50. In my recent trip to Zermatt, I left my 50 and my 70-300 at home, but brought my 10-22 and my 18-125. I could have used the 70-300 on a couple of shots, so I regretted that a little! But I'm glad I brought my tripod!

It's a tough choice, but if I could only take one lens, I'd choose the 18-55mm because of its great range from wide angle to telephoto.
Having said that, I would be very hesitant to leave the 50mm prime at home, because it's great for low light shots (i.e. shots inside the casinos, etc.). It's such a small, light little lens, I'd try to find room for it in my luggage. Maybe wrap it up in a couple T-shirts to protect it :) |
