please check that little box that the comment was helpful - if for no other reason to let us know you took the time to read the critique we took time to do. I have had some people be kind and PM me a thanks for the comment - but then still not check the box. It really helps me to know whether or not I'm doing alright critiqueing. If you feel my comments were not helpful, please PM me to explain why. This way we all grow and learn.

ShutterPug, this happens to me too, I'll get an email thanking me for the comments and how they totally agree, and what an awesome helpful critique it was, and then it's the only critique on the photo left without a 'helpful'. While there's not 'bonus' for having helpful marks, it does look like to the general public, that the photographer found every comment BUT mine helpful.
I've given 13 CC's this year. Only 3 of them are left unchecked. I received a PM from one of the unchecked thanking me etc... and the other 2 haven't logged in since they submitted the photos, so I'm sure they are really concerned about comments anyway. sheesh *rolls eyes*
All in all, that's not a bad ratio of helpful/nonhelpful, and I even got selected as a 'favorite photographer' by one of them!! (thanks shaver)
Oh, and a little announcement about 'helpfuls'...I reached 1400 helpfuls today thanks to Beetle for #1400.
Shutterpug...do you send a PM to the photographer? |

I feel your pain Linda and it gets discouraging but then when I feel down about no one click the helpful button, I got a PM from one that I critiqued just to say thank you. That one PM was worth it all!
EDIT:The User that PM'ed me with a thank you also check the helpful box.

Ah, yes. Here too. I seem to have helped 5 people in 2006, and not helped 7. However, I have received some nice PMs both from the "helped" and "not helped" recipients.
Hey, I'm having a good time and learning lots.
Hope the people getting critiqued are as well. I tried.
And yes, I send out the PMs to warn them of a comment. HBunch, I tried your suggestion of holding down the shift key and then the photographers name. Works fine. Don't do that in reverse order. Unless you want to write the whole thing over again! LOL

Not everyone uses the checkbox the same way -- I use it to show read/unread. My checking the box has little to do with if I felt helped afterwards. It's nice to see a high 'helpful' rating in our user's profile, but don't take it personally if it isn't.

The queue is cleared every challenge changeover, so if you didn't receive one on a past entry, you wont.
There are way more requests than volunteers giving critiques at the moment (hoping to fix that soon), so not everyone is guaranteed a critique. It's kind of hit and miss. We've been doing really great so far this year, so here's to hoping we can keep that up. |

Well as a new member of CC, I am glad to see that it happens to other people. I have started doing them this week, and have done several, I get PM's thanking me with comments and some still dont check the box. I know that I helped them by their comments, and think they just forget to check the box, or dont understand that they should.

Nice email announcement. In mine I say...
Hi there. Per your request, you have received an in depth critique from the Critique Club on your **** challenge entry titled "LINK to photo". I hope you find this helpful. ~Heather~
I just added the 'per your request...in depth critique' part this year. I figured for those who do not associate the Critique Club with the little check box, that this might help clear things up. I read in the forums a guy who thought that it meant that he wanted comments during the challenge. He thought that if he didn't check the box, he would get no comments. So I thought this small bit of informatino would be helpful to add.
When I start my critique, I will sometimes also say 'per your request, here is your in depth critique from the Critique Club'.
Hey, if it helps just one person... |

That's not a bad ratio actually. About 66% helpful. Figuring that there are some who will never even see them (I've had 2 this week who never came back to the site after submitting the image and checking the box)some who do not use the check boxes at all.
I was curious, so I went back through mine and got about the same results. I only looked at 159 of them before I got bored, but out of the 159, 121 were marked helpful. Those are my first 159 CC's. I'll have to check with my most recent CC's and see how the stats are on that.
But see, I guess the important thing to realise is that the photographer isn't the only person who reads the comments made on the images. Other people read them and can learn from them as well. It's been suggested posting a link somewhere to all the CC's given and think that will help increase views of those CC's, which are usually very helpful to everyone. I like this idea, and will push for it.
I think I personally learn from giving the critiques as well, so there's at least one person who's been helped by every single critique I've given. :) |

| I just added up mine and I'm at 70% helpful. If I added correctly. I have been trying to do one a day to have 365 critiques this year. So I know my helpful rating will most likely go down. |

I kind of make it a policy to check all comments as helpful, even if they aren't.. also I guess I just haven't been lucky with critiques, never gotten one on my entrys. Or maybe they just suck with no apparent way to improve them, who knows

The CC photos are randomly drawn from a non seeable list. We just click a button and up pops a photo, so nothing personal. If you don't get one on the photo by a week or so after the results for that challenge are posted, then you wont get one on that image. |

Only the helpful comments you MAKE show up in your profile stats, and that is updated weekly I think (it says on your profile when it's updated)
Hope that helps. ~Heather~ |

I really think it'd be a great idea to add a flag to the comment so that if a CC member is providing a critique it is clear that such is a critique and not just a comment.
The other day I got a critique from the CC. They stated such clearly. It was however, the first critique to ever have done so. Now, for all I know...this is the very first time my photos have ever received an official critique. (Now, I've had some great comments in the past....that gave good critiques. But I would never know if that was merely a good comment or a critique. This should be stated absolutely in the Critique or with some flag.)
I think everyone (critiquers and the critiqued would be much happier as we the critique would know we've received some attention and the system works. And those who critique will receive better return as well.
