Are there any voting trends on DPC such as "better scores can be expected early in the challenge while lower scores tend to be given toward the end," etc?
For the first time I have a picture scoring above 6.4 on average and I noticed a trend. This picture started getting a LOT of votes quickly. I think I had 90 votes the first day and that seems unusual. The it dawned on me. Maybe I'm getting more votes because people are just looking at thumbnails of pictures in the challenge and only voting on the ones they like where before I never had a photo that really caught the eye so my picture was only rated by those who page through every vote. Do you think this happens? Do you think some people just vote on thumbnails, picking out their potential favs so that the better your photo is the more likely you are going to score big points quickly? Conversly an average to below average photo would score more slowly since it would only be voted on by those who page through every picture and that takes time.
I guess what I'm really asking is, how likely is my 6.4+ to hold up? Can I expect it to level out now with 200+ votes under it or am I to expect a slew of bad votes toward the end that could kill it? Or is it possible to get a string of good votes at the end and raise it?
Any trends you have seen would be greatly appreciated. |

In my experience, average goes up a bit towards the end of voting.
This thread might be of some use.

One follow-on comment. I noticed that votes tend to raise a little when final votes are tallied. In other words if you have a 5.24 at the end of voting you might end up with a 5.33 when the final votes are tabulated. I'm assuming that might be because some of the people giving lower votes tend to be bored and might quit voting before they meet the 20% minimum requirement and therefore the low votes tend to drop off a little. Does anyone else notice this happening? Have you seen votes drop from the final vote score to when the results are tabulated? |

My scores have always gone up except once...which is still my highest score and that dropped .2X after tallying.
My belief is that the early voters are usually more agressive, probably a bit too excited and have something at stake...therefore more competetive and it reflects in their votes. Whereas people that aren't entered casually chip away at the voting and are more fair minded, so the trend appears to be more level headed.
If you like your image or think it's better than many others and it's getting nailed down quickly, in the early going...I can only imagine that that would piss you off right out the gate...so there's also a good number of people who are voting angry...
Those are just my guesses.
So don't vote angry...

Don't forget about the "sorters" who put everybody in the middle votes on the first pass through. Then adjust votes on the second pass(often at a later time), usually they only raise votes when doing this.

Yes...and god bless them. That might be one of the more powerful factors in the upward trend. |

If a person does not vote on at least 20% of the entries, when the rollover occurs, their votes are thrown out of the mix and not counted. This usually accounts for the difference in score just before and after rollover.

with my entries I usually see the early votes giving a low score, middle votes levelling it out and later votes bringing it up. |

I am pretty new to DPC but all my entries this far have jumped up just before the voting is over. |

Of all the challenges I have entered I have been able to get a good idea of where my score would end up after about 50 votes. After that many votes it will likely not jump more than plus or minus .3 points. But I have only been in four challenges so i am not positive. I also have experienced a jump at the end of voting for all my entries...usually not more than a .1 increase though. |

I am a sorter and have 3,5 & 7 buckets and then go back and either demote or promote the images. It's uncommon for me to push a photo past the next bucket but it does happen. I do this sometimes over a few days, so an interum score from me is not much help to you (although it would depend on how many sorters there are). |

This was going to be my response almost verbatim. After 100 votes, you're pretty much locked into where your score will range, with some slight variation. The question then becomes, is a 6.4 a top 10, or top 30? (that has varied pretty widely across the challenges, depending on subject, number of entries, and of course quality of entries).
I have also read on an earlier thread that during the final calculations, some outliers are thrown out, which would account for the increase in scores after final voting (i.e., if someone voted all 1's, their votes would actually not count in the final calculation). |
