I will be meeting with a client tonight to go over a project he is working on. He needs help with editing about 25 photos that he has created for a book his client is working on. Editing will likely consist of cleaning up backgrounds, adjusting exposure, and such.

I have a rough idea already what I will ask in terms of money for performing the work. While "hourly rate" and "fixed fee" were both mentioned in the conversation, it is likely that we will agree on a fixed price for the project. My question is: what is the usual hourly $$ rate for this type of work?

I'm guessing that a 1/2 hour per photo might be required.

Thank you,
Linda

$25-35/hr would be about right IMO, unless you're a superstar with a track record, but then you wouldn't be asking this question. I can see you settling for less, for 25 photos, if you want the work, but above would be reasonable.

Would anyone else like to comment?

I have a co-worker who does photoshop editing for pay on weekends. For small jobs, he asks for $40/hour. For jobs which are over 10 hours long, he has a set rate of $30/hour.

I also know a person who charged a flat $50 per picture. Clients had to pay only if they liked what he has done.

Hope this helps,
Eugene

Thanks everyone. The rates you have quoted are in line with what I had initially quoted while we were doing the "show me your cards and I will show you mine" negotiation dance. However, because my client is also a struggling startup (like me), I was thinking of going much lower, just to be able to demonstrate my ability. There is a small potential for more work in the future from him. Your comments have caused me to reconsider.....

BTW - has anyone browsed the project bidding site at Elance.com? They have photo retouching and photoshoot project requests there as well as a whole bunch of other types of project suitable for work-at-home people. Of course, the lowest bid usually wins the project....

Geez, did I ever get screwed. LOL...I used to do enhancing of photos for $3 to $10 a PHOTO, and not by the hour. I did pretty well, and my work was loved by many, but I am out of the biz now.
