Ok so I need a bigger hard drive, but I'm somewhat confused by the designations (ultra ata 100, ata 133, etc). So my question is how can I figure out what kind I need. I have a Dell Demension 4300 if this helps. |

Im no expert but unless you are using your computer for some hardcore gaming, get the best deal on a large drive from a retailer like staples. They come with good rebates. I recently got a 250 gig drive for about $90 after rebates. For most of us the techno geek stuff is irrelevant |

If you have USB2 get external. It's the easyest to install and almost as fast as internal.
I got this for $129 free shipping

Right now it is a $179. Keep an eye on buy.com They just had a black verson the this drive for $129 The price will probably come back in few days.

Dell Dimension 4300 is not a recent model therefor unless you've added a SATA card, ignore any and all SATA drives. You can't use them without an addon card if your motherboard doesn't have it.
As for the ATA drives pick the one that has the capacity that you are looking for. 66, 100, and 133 refer to the transfer speed and you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference. I buy based on dollars per Gigabyte. $.50 a Gb is the best price right now. $250 Gb for $125.

I recommend Seagate and Western Digital drives. Both have good reputations, and the seagates have a 5 year warranty.
This one would be good. 250GB, 8mb cache, IDE interface. |

I picked up a 160GB Seagate ATA drive for $40 (after rebates, $109 before) at Circuit City. That's only $0.25/GB.

Ditto the Seagate recommendation. They recently increased their warranty on all drives to 5 years. I've dealt with Seagate, WD and Maxtor as customers in a previous life, and, well, let's just say I have all Seagate drives in my desktop sysgtems.
The ATA-100 drives are bargain priced right now. SATA (Serial-ATA) is replacing the parallel ATA drives, so they are being marked down. If gthe ultimate in performance is not a requirement, go for one of the ATA-100 drives. A SATA drive would require a SATA ingterface card.
