Please let me know what you think of my recent photo shoot.
Setup:
Nikon D70
24-120 VR lens
2 flashes - 1 on camera with diffuser, 1 remote to create colored background or bounce off ceiling
Big apartment but no wide open spaces
One girl that always wants more pictures of her
Cat that hates flash
This is me tired after about 250 shots:
Any kind of feedback is great. Don't be afraid to say if it sucks but be sure to tell me why.
Thanks
Nick

ohmigod!
She's both a looker and incredibly like someone I was married to a few centuries ago. Unbelievable. Scary but lovely.
Puts me in mind of Blanchet's Galadriel

Anyway, as for your work I like several of the shots you have in there but it looks like you may have introduced some artifacts in your resizing for the web. The shots looks slightly out of focus. Can you sharpen them more? I like the colored background and it seems pretty clear that she feels comfortable posing. Work with her more. You're getting her out of the center of the frame in several shots and getting some different angles so thats good. Keep on experimenting.
With some of the closeups like 3075, 3103 or 3248 you might want to think about softening her skintones a little. I find that I like Nikons a little better for skintones but even then you sometimes need a little softening. What aperture were you shooting at? Some of those look to have a very shallow depth of field. You did a good job keeping her eyes in focus throughout the series but you might want to close down the lens by a stop or so just to see if that helps with maintaining focus (like I said it could just be the process of saving them for the web). Looks like a good set of photos, tho.

You are right there are 1 or 2 shots that missed focus and 2 or 3 where I shook the camera. I was shooting at 1/60 and in few shots I had 100-120mm. I turned on VR to eliminate that half way into the shoot. What I should have done also is set camera to f5.6. I was shooting in P mode.
I'm probably getting 3rd flash as a birthday present so that'll make things more fun in the future.
Thanks for the comment

hey Nikolai- Good pictures youve got here. A few things I noticed aside from what was mentioned.
On image 3099 her fly-away hairs a very distracting Im sure this was a small shoot with minimal people and whatnot but all you need to fix this is a bit of hair spray on your hand to make those stay. Also the make-up is a bit under done so the flash makes her skin seem a little blotchy.
I like the different color lights in the BG but it seems that you should try to crop the parts of the wall where the color starts to die. Also try posing her a bit further away from the wall to avoid the shadows on the wall.
Image 3248, 3272 are one of the ones I like most mainly because of the intensity of her look. Out of all the ones with the darker BG are the ones I like better.
I hope my comments help some.. :] |
