When do you or don't you need a model release? I read on a stock site (don't remember which one) that you only need a model release if there is a clear face in your picture? What about special events where everyone is taking pictures and the participants are expecting to have their pictures taken? I was at a battle re-enactment this weekend and have some photos of individuals dressed up as soldiers and indians. Some you can see their faces and others you can't. Some have so much "war paint" on that the face is not recognizable as any specific individual. I didn't have any model releases with me, but I did ask some of the people if I could take their pictures and was given the OK. I am sure that isn't enough for some stock sites, but what has been your experience?

Any shot for commercial use should have a model release, editorial usage can squeak by without it. Always get a model release if you can at the time, your photo will be more usable this way.

Even if you can't see the face, some stock agencies want a release. You can still submit it, but any use must be editorial and not commercial.
