So how many 4x4 trucks or vehicle will be there? Many places a car is fine others require 4x4. Anyone interested in a Shafer Trail return mid-day after a visit to Dead Horse Point? Just an idea if there is interest. If you are scared of steep dirt roads, sheer cliff and a long way down from the side window of a 4x4 this may not be the one for ya ;)

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what happened to Brent Ward? I always check to see my favs newest photos and I haven't seen his stuff online for a while...and it says that his profile has been deleted...???
Anyone? |

Nick,
Of course you can bring some, but the bugs you find in Moab don't react well to bug spray, it just pisses them off. They really aren't the bitting type they just seem to swarm.
Don I will have my Dodge truck which is 4X4, you want to do some geocaching?

I'll have my Ford F-350 4x4 also and will have a couple of GPS's. That might be something we can start to do; put together some lat / long's for those who have gps's. Do you do geocaching also? I've slowed down the geocaching a lot since moving stronger into photography. If they're easy to get to or on the way I try to grab them.

My wife and I have in the past, but I just got a new GPS so it has stirred interest again, I just saw one time where you posted you geocached. We maybe go 1 or 2 times a month in nice weather.

I've found about 1200 in the last couple of years. It ws fun getting out, exploring and see new places. Great exercise too. I think Photograpgy and Geocaching are probably a real good team, easy to do at the same time.

Brent is coming to the GTG, but I've been sending things to his regular email address, not through the PM. Give me a PM if you want his email.
RE: 4x4. We're bringing a Dodge Durango 4x4 which should take us anywhere we want to go. I don't tend to be the most adventursome driver, however. How steep are those cliffs? ;-)

If you've never driven the Shafer trail it is almost a must. Not quite cut-backs but with my truck I will probably need to backup a few times, the F-350 have very BIG turn radius. The road is cut down the cliff face almost with part of it resting on top of huge solid rock ledges. It is across the canyon from Dead Horse Point. It makes for an easy return after Dead Horse Point back to Moab. No need to follow the same boring road back. ....hummmmmm maybe I'll bring my hang glider and jump off the ledges at Dead Horse. Last time I unloaded and started to set it up there, my wife started to cry, I reminded her of my life insurance and she would be rich but that didn't help matters. She probably wishes she let me now ;).
Anyway, the Shafer Trail starts very near Island in the Sky Visitor Center and ends up in the bottom along the Colorado River. A dirt road back to Moab through Potash and ready for an evening run somewhere else. You drive right by the bottom of the Dead Horse Point cliff face. I haven't done it in about 10 years. If I remember the road back to Moab goes by a lot of indian petroglyphs.
Here's a few views of the trail.
Shafer Trail at the bottom. These are from Doug Noble's web site.

I was just reminded that it is me and "wife" that will be there. How could I be so silly to forget that ;)

After months of planning and this being on my calendar, it looks like I won't be able to come because of quite sudden obligations concerning my wife's work. Dang!
I'm a creative thinker, however, and will still try to make it down somehow. It might not be until Sunday, though. Please keep fingers crossed!

Tripod question:
How do you take tripod on the plane? Should I check it in inside my bag of clothes and stuff? I'm worried it maybe stolen or broken. Any ideas?

Of course it depends on the tripod, but I take the head off my Bogen 3001 and it fits my suitcase diagonally. I travel with it regularly. The bagchecker folks LOVE the mystery of the head... the 3030 head is such a unique thing that they OFTEN take it out and fondle it. (Yeah, right!)
If you have a bigger tripod than that, and it doesn't fit, I have an older 3001 (without a head) and could loan it to you for the get-together, Nikolai. Let me know.

Thanks f-32 for the offer. Being that I just go new tripod myself I would realy want to use it.
My only concern was if it was ok to take it on the plane with you. Now that you told me it is fine I'm not going to check it in. If there are any problems I'll just show security your post. :)
Thanks
Nick

Nick you might want to show up at the airport a little early and be prepared to check it if needed. I travel more than my fair share and have cleared security and carried a tripod on the plane only to be turn away on the return trip. The TSA web site has a list of prohibited items but tripods aren't list specifically although it list camera equipment as being able to be carried on. All I'm saying is be prepared either way, and by the way in 17 years of flying I have never had anything stolen from my bags.
Hope you have a good flight out,
John
I see on your website you must be into snow skiing and have Belleayre listed. My uncle was the superintendent years ago and I am from Flesichmanns.

This is a last minute request but my husband who is accompanying me on this GTG would love to know if anyone attending rock climbs. He would rather be playing Spiderman while I "point and shoot" all day. If you are interested, bring your gear and we'll meet you at the Riverside Oasis on Friday; maybe something to do/watch when the sun is too bright for photography. |

Urusla had to leave this AM.
Digital Knight had to cancel.
Everyone else looks good to go.
