Suggestion for all...Put a fairly large "DPC" sign in the window of your vehicle so we can recognize us.

Sunday:
Shooting in Arches

Disclaimer: I am no expert on shooting in Arches. If you have more knowledge about shooting here please forward me your ideas and I will add them. I am only trying to put together a guide for everyone on the outing to use.

On Sunday you can choose to spend the day in Arches National Park.

//www.nps.gov/arch/index.htm
Download Arches Vistor Guide 1.2mb PDF

There are many wonderful places to shoot in Arches and there is no way to do everything in one day. I wanted to put together this guide so everyone can spend the day shooting as they wish or form smaller groups to spend the day together. We should meet for lunch and reform for the afternoon. We should have an early dinner in order to regroup for an evening outing.

The entrance fee is (and donĂ¢€™t quote me on this) $10.00 for 7 days, we may be going to multiple parks, so you may want to buy the $50.00 annual national park pass.

Bring polarizer filters!
Stay on the trails and off the cryptogamic soil, you will see signs
Bring water, food, good shoes, first aid kit, and a hat
Don't forget the sun screen

I live about 3 hours from Moab and don't have anything planned for that weekend yet. I might possibly barge in for Sun evening Arches pics if no one minds.

It looks like F-32 (David Timms) is willing to organize and lead out on Saturday morning.

JRTodd and friends are making sure we're organized and leading out on Suday both AM and PM to Arches. Take a look at his posting for details of places and possibilities.

Anyone else willing to organize and lead out?
BrentWard, we'd like to get that great sunrise shot of Mesa/Landscape? Arch.
PhantomEWO, you've scouted out the area. How about leading out a group?
Anyone know Canyonlands?
Nightshy, we'd like you and your dad to share some of his great knowledge. Let us know when and what.

We still want to shoot some ruins, too.

What an exciting adventure. I'm certainly gettng ready.

The best place for that may be Hovenweep, or maybe Cedar Mesa, all about 2 1/2 to 3 hours away.

I'd love to shoot there, but with out limited time, do we want to justify it? There is so much where we are. Any smaller sites closer?

I will plan on something to ancient kiva, I am just not sure how happy the park service would be to have 20 some of us going out at one time. I will check it out when we get there.
04/22/2006 11:47:26 AM · #187
Thanks, John. I'm not sure how many want to go, but I'd love to see Ancient Kiva.

BrentWard is coming and bringing Nick from Denver. He's planning on shooting Delicate Arch on Friday (about 6pm meeting), Mesa Arch on Saturday (about 5am meeting) and the sunset from Canyonlands on Saturday pm. He's invited anyone who would like to join him to do so.

We'll fit in Dead Horse Point at sometime. It's so deep that I think it will need to have some light into the canyon to shoot it well. I'm thinking that midmorning should work.

I plan on being there, probably before friday. Again there are lots of ancient Indian ruins. Many are in Montezuma Creek area just south of Monticello. Problem is that it's about 70 miles south of Moab and the drive through the canyon will take several hours. There are dozens if not hundreds of graineries, ruins, carvings in cliff walls, etc. It is estimated that at one time there were over a million indians living in that single canyon. Most of the canyon is on private property but driving the road and walking to many ruins would be ok. There is also one restored below ground Kiva that the park system or BLM has maintained and is in "working" condition right on the road. This may be a good mid-day run when the sun isn't as important for scenic sunrise or sunset photo ops. No promise but if interest I can check with the land owners to see if we can explore some of the ruins. In any case you can see dozens from the dirt road. These pics are ones I took from the road. The one is a piece of ancient indian pottery in a dirt bank. The next to last pic is one of the modern homes built into the cliffs in the canyon and the last .... well could he be the last of the Warriors? (actually I took this in San Antonio this week).

Just 8 days until the GTG!!!

I've sent an email with details to everyone who's indicated interest. Make sure you got yours.

Either post here or email me your plans. When are you planning to be there? Where are you staying? Anything else I need to know?

I hope you're getting ready. It's coming.....................

Edited for grammar.

For those of you planning on shooting Deliicate Arch on Friday evening, Brent and Nikolai are going to be arriving with little time to spare. Therefore, he'd like us to start hiking to the arch rather than waiting at the parking lot. It's a moderately stenuous hike (2.something miles) and will probably take some of us longer than the athletic Brent and Nikolai.

Besides, he needs someone to save his place. LOL!

For anyone traveling from SLC

From KSL
UDOT will be restricting U.S. Highway 6 to one lane at Red Narrows (milepost 191) in Spanish Fork Canyon for HAZMAT cleanup efforts. Lane restrictions will be in effect for the next three weeks between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Motorists should expect delays of up to 20 minutes in each direction. Both travel lanes will remain open during the weekends.

Stock up on sunblock, folks, and dont forget your waterbottles! It's gonna be sunny and dry and VERY photogenic!

For those who want to brag/complain/ask what went wrong, I did manage to get a new digital projector so we can share our day's highlights before falling asleep exhausted under Moab's starry skies.

I'm leaving SLC early Thursday afternoon and have room for one (possibly two) more passengers. If someone needs a ride, there's room for a tripod or two and a couple of camera bags as well. Let me know.

My son drives this stretch weekly. I said it was not very bad during the day. The stretch through Orem was much worse with slow traffic. He exits and returns at the exits and makes much better time. LOL.
