The link to the cabins (and cost) is in the 1st post.

I'm planning on shooting on the 5th and the 8th. The drive is about 4 hours from Salt Lake. That leaves plenty of time for shooting Friday evening and Monday morning (depending on your flight times.)

One more question:

What time will the carpool leave SLC and when will it return?

Thanks

Nick,

You are the 1st that has indicated you wanted to carpool. I'll be heading down about 7 or 8 am on Friday. F-32 is heading down on Thursday night about 5-6 pm and has room for one other.

PM me with your specific needs and I'll work on making sure you get a ride at the right time.

Steve (naldslc) and I are heading down Thursday AM if that helps. We are going to spend an extra day camping some where and will not be back until Tuesday PM but I have room.

Just ordered plane tickets!!!

I'll be flying to Denver, CO and driving over with Brent on the 5th. I know it's a longer way but all good flights to SLC were sold out and only weird times were avaliable.

I'm not too clear about cabins. I didn't see price on the first page either.
rjkstesch: are you offering to share multiroom cabin or you saying there may be one avaliable for me?

What's good about cabin vs staying in a hotel?

Unless something unexpected happens in the next couple weeks, my 2 daughters and I will be in Moab by Thursday, we will need to leave on Sunday morning.

We are camping (we are very used to camping). I have not made reservations. I think the Moab campground is full, right? I was hoping to camp at the Arches campground (or, if that is full or not available, wherever).

Anyway. My daughters and I are really looking forward to this trip. Look out for a red Subaru with British Columbia license plates :)

The Moab campground has plenty of tent spots and will allow overflow tent spots by our cabins.

We are soooo excited to have you coming. We'll be watching for you.

Oh, OK, for some reason I thought it was full. Will make reservations tomorrow.

We're excited too :)

Can someone tell what kind of weather should I be prepared for? Days, nights?

Thanks

Nick

For the forecast you can go to www.ksl.com and click on weather, enter Moab. Should be highs in the 80's, lows in the 50's, not to hot.

Little problem - Riverside Oasis tells me they do not have anything available anymore.

Wow, this place is busy. Arches campground doesn't have any reservations available either.

Any way I could set up my tent on someone's place? I'd be willing to share cost.

Becky said they would allow us to set up tents around the cabins, you are more than welcome to set up at ours. For Thursday night there is a lot of camping around Moab, we often poach a site along Shafer Trail west of Potash. It's easy to find a spot if you are familiar with the place, not so if you are not. It looks like we will leave SLC after noon some time so we will be hunting a spot as well. I will send you a PM if you want with my contact info, maybe we can help you when you arrive.

I'd appreciate that, very much. We also should be in the area by Thursday afternoon.

What a wonderful time you all will have! I am going to be in SLC on 4/28 through 5/7 when I have to drive back to Seattle. I really want to see Arches and Capitol Reef. My only trip to that area was to Bryce & Zion.

My SLC to Bryce & Zion Road Trip

Wish I had know about this sooner - maybe next year :)

PS: I can't wait to see all of the excellent photos!

Time to put the last details together for the trip.

F-3(David Timms)is coming with 2 friends and will lead an outing. I'll be e-mailing those who have indicated some knowledge of the area to see if they will be willing to lead outings.

Step forward and let me know if you are willing to set the agenda for a morning or evening and get us to a scenic area with good light.

Becky I will be glad to help anyway I can, I know my way to some of the more popular areas, Moab Diner, Eddie McStiffs, Moab Brewery. (j/k)

If you have some ideas or heard some ideas of spots let me know and I will help out.
I might suggest:
Courthouse Towers
Petrified Dunes
Balanced Rock as a good morning run.

I'm also good at getting up in the morning.

John

Good John (JRTodd) - We'll plan on you heading up an excursion for an AM. Let me know if you want Sat., Sunday or Monday AM. You also mentioned Ancient Kiva in Canyonlands. Would you be willing to lead us there?
04/16/2006 09:40:52 PM · #168
I'm still planning on being there with my 5th wheel. I didn't get a rv spot cause it was up and down about making it. Now my only single daughter who lives in Salt Lake set her wedding date for the end of Jun so we need to get there so her mom can help prepare. I guess we'll just play it by ear on where to park for the weekend. Getting excited.

I have never actually been there, I have a map and can stop off at the welcome center and verify my directions. I really want to find Ancient Kiva and will give it a go. From all I hear it is a late afternoon trip.

This is a capture off my screen of the ancient kiva (largest ruins in the grand Gulch) at the Junction Ruin (junction of Kane Gulch and Grand Gulch) from my TOPO! program, it is 3.41 mile hike one way. The elevation profile is shown at the bottom. The very bottom of the frame is at 5900 feet and each different color up is 100ft. The length horizontally is the 3.41 miles. The left side is at the ruin and the right is at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station.
At a normal pace about an hour and a half to 2 hours to get there. Just a bit of info on that one.

Tracy,
I think we are talking about 2 different places, your map shows the area of what I know as Turkey Pin, although that site is farther south on your map. The area I was referring to is know as ancient or false kiva and is located in Canyonlands NP.
So many places share the same names.
Grand Gulch is one of my favorite areas and is a great hike.

THIS IS NOT MY PICTURE, it is linked from blackrabbit.com

Well, Turkey Pen is about another half mile down that canyon, yes. Hadn't ever seen THAT false kiva before, but then again I need to trapse through more of the Canyonlands, too. Still love that Grand Gulch!
