I'm getting excited about the trip. And just to share a bit of personal excitement this is what I found out last night:
I spent some time with my mom last night talking about the many things that have been and are going on. And I happened to mention the Moab GTG and asked if she and my dad (who has since passed away) had ever taken us kids to Moab (thinking maybe they had done so back before I could remember).
Anyway, her eyes lit up. And although the answer was no, that we as a family had never been to Moab, as it turns out she spent 9 years in Moab as a youth growing up. And she and my dad had gone there on sort of a 2nd honeymoon the year they were married (oh so many years ago). She spoken fondly of the many beautiful places to see and of some of her experiences back then.
Anyway, so now the personal challenge for me is this: To bring back images that will help bring back memories of her youth and of the time she spent there as newlyweds.
I'm so excited! |

I just snagged the last cabin at Riverside Oasis, folks. It makes me happy to think there'll be such a gathering of fellow photo addicts - this is gonna be FUN!
MY only hangup is this: it is TEN WEEKS away! Maybe we should do a mini GTG of locals so a few of us know one another (and maybe become a little more comfortable about carpooling)...
There are lots of great options to do this - the new SL library, for instance, or Red Butte Gardens or Temple Square or Thanksgiving Point Gardens in the snow or skiers at Park City/Snowbird/wherever or those idio--- I mean the ice climbers who use pitons and picks to climb Bridal Veil Falls or a fast run to Goblin Valley (maybe over Presidents Day weekend) or... any of a zillion places - anyone out there interested?

Hello all, It looks like all of the cabins and 1 RV site are taken. I also placed tent spaces in reserve. They may have more RV spaces. A nearby place that MAY have cabins, is //www.moab-utah.com/moabvalleyrv/ (Moab Valley RV). They haven't returned my call, so I don't know. Their number is 435-259-4469 or fax 4035-259-4483.
F-32, I'm definitely up for a local GTG. I'll be in St. George from Feb. 15 - 19 and will be doing some shooting, including Zion's NP. I'd love to shoot the ice climbers (do I have the glass for that?) and anything around town would be wonderful. Is it possible to fit in something after work on a weekday?(late afternoon/early evening.) We have a wonderful city line that would be great at twilight, including downtown.
I've got phone numbers for naldslc (steve), dwterry and justin-hewlett, so we have a way to get in touch with several of us quickly. Steve works with some of the other local members.
BTW - you have to have a photo pass to shoot on the grounds of Thanksgiving Point ($400/yr? or $60/day?, can't remember the exact amount.)

I just turned down a wedding job for this weekend. Now, it's costing me even more. Yet, it will be worth it to shoot what I want and meet you all.
I've not heard much about specific places you'd like to shoot. I'm guessing you're like me and don't feel you know the area well enough to ask for one spot over another.
As I've looked at the maps and info of the area, it looks like we have enough to shoot in Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Dead Horse Point SP and the Slickrock to keep us shooting far longer than we have time.
Dacrazyn seems to be the only person to speak up for the long hikes. He may want to plan his course and allow others to join in if they like hiking. I'll work on contacting some people to see if they would lead a group for an outing (or you can contact me.) The arrangements I'll work on will have us mainly shooting in those 4 areas.
If you wish to head a "hunt and shoot" (hunt during the day for possible sites and go back later for the great light to shoot), I'd be fine with that. Most of us don't know the area well enough to have all the great angles scouted out.
Let me know.

I was just looking at a few things on camp sites. How many are there possible still looking? There are riverside RV (albiet not for the huge rigs) and tent campsites on BLM land that are cheap. These are usually a first come, first serve basis, but there are a few that take reservations, and have spaces from 15 up to 180 campers. They usually run $2.00 per person per night. There are a few 15-25 occupancy areas still available at this time. I am looking at coming still, but do have to finalize a few things.
One in particular is here...
//www.blm.gov/utah/moab/campgrounds.html (this is the main site with ALL of them).
The group ones are here //www.blm.gov/utah/moab/group.html
with Gold A, B and D; Onion; Big Bend A, and Windwhistle open at the GTG time. Depending on where people want to go, Windwhistle is 26 miles from Monticello (near the Needles District of Canyonlands)..
These are reservable for ~$30 a night, the more there the cheaper. SOme of these have no potable water, but it is near (to town also).
The things I am finalizing is bringing or not bringing my 4 year old and 1-4 friends...if I have 5 people, $6.00 a night is great and I would reserve it for my friends and I and then welcome others. Hopefully know more real soon.
Take a look and see what others think...if you haven't looked at these yet.

I looked up Windwhistle on the Google Maps...Here...press the Hybrid button
Big Bend is Here with alot of the first comes first serve camp areas up and down this area also. I usually go looking for these when near Moab.
Goldbar (I think is here) Here
And Onion Creek Here Way up the road!!
You can zoom in and out on these...pretty fun. And also see what else is nearby, etc.
And here is Horsethief Campground near Dead Horse Point...Here

I'm so disappointed! I have to cancel out due to a conflict. I will not be back from another trip until the 5th and there is no way I could drive down from Washington and make the meet.
So I'm giving up my cabin at Riverside Oasis to anyone who wants it. I'll be canceling today if I can get hold of Mrs. Paxman, if not I'll send her an e-mail.
Attention: there should now be one cabin avaialbe!

I got the cabin, Thanks. Sorry you are not going to make it.
Edit to sound less greedy and happy about getting a cabin, sorry.

I'm still planning on coming! This will be great. I didn't get a campsite, but I've never had a problem getting somewhere to sleep when I've gone down. I may just camp right in one of the parks. The site at Arches is great for early morning sun. Don't plan on sleeping in!

TWO MONTHS to go - I think I've lined up a digital projector, so we can share the highlights of our days' shoots. I think it'll be great fun to see how other eyes see the same area yet produce different images.
I'm SO ready to slather on the SPF-80 sunblock and leave the cell phone off... oh yeah, AND to meet a bunch of fellow photo fanatics - in such a photogenic place! |

Looks like I better opt out for sure, unfortunately. I already have one weekend off in May, and two would be pushing it. Maybe next time. |

I am very interested in barging in on your GTG in May. I will be traveling to Oregon around that time and would like nothing better than to meet up with DPC folks, BS about photography and take a few pictures. It would be toward the end of your photo safari if I make it.
I will be watching this thread closely so that I can figure a way to meet up with you. It sounds like a great time.

I think I could make mid-day of the 7th and morning of the 8th for this GTG.
I am interested in coming and taking sunset and surise shots at Arches NP. If there is anyone willing and able to show me the good places I'd really like that. You guys will probably be sick of the place by then but will know where the best locations are and I'd go with your recommendations.
I will not have a laptop with me so I am wondering if someone will have one that I might use to burn my own CDs in order to reuse my memory cards. Please? I will be stopping at Monument Valley for sunrise on the way up and want to take some good multi-image panoramas while there.

I'll be bringing my laptop. I can bring my burner, too. As long as we have electricity (which we should), we'll be good to go. You just have to share your knowledge - such a small price.

Thank you very, very much, Becky. I've had the priveledge to take pictures with dsidwell before and I will look forward to meeting you and everyone else that is there when I arrive.
I will keep an eye on this thread so I can make last minute decisions, but think it will be a great opportunity to meet fellow DPCers.

We're down to 1 RV or cabin, and overflow tent sites at the Riverside Oasis. If you're interested in the cabin, PM me so that I can switch my reservation to the RV site.
We're delighted to add stdavidson to our group for a day or so. Yakatme, we'd love to have you join us. Traquino98, we're disappointed that you won't be there.
F-32, the digital projector will be awesome. It is so great to share the shots we've taken through the day.

I would be IN if it was later in May, once I return to Colorado country. I am in Florida until then. There is only a very very small chance of me getting back in time. Never been in Utah before. Other than Vegas, never even been farther west than central Colorado so this trip would really appeal to me.

Hmmm.... sad. That should be right around sunset I would imagine. I'd love to go to the symposium. But, I think I'd rather be out shooting. Wonder why they don't hold the symposium in the middle of the day when photography itself will be at its worst?!? |

Good news. It looks like I'll able to go.
I heard that all the cabins have been sold out. I see that there are some hotels avaliable in Moab, UT. Is that something that is close to the meeting place? There is Sleep Inn Moab and Moab Valley Inn that are cheap. Should I book one of those or look for something else?

The town of Moab is quite small, so I would consider any hotel room that you can find as fairly close. I think the campground/cabins where several of us have reservations is located on the north side of town and most of main street is only about 2-3 miles long. If you have a car it's only minutes. Or we can pick you up:)
Oh yeah, Moab Valley Inn, we stayed there dozens of times, long story, but we really like the place. It is on the south side of town but again really only minutes away.

Nikolai - I have both a cabin and an RV (trailer) spot so that I could save them for us. If you would like the cabin, we should be able to do that. Let me know. I'll have to contact the clerk so see can release it to you.
Congratulations! We're excited to have you join us!

Thanks for the offer. How much is the cabin per night?
Also, am I right to understand that on 5th and 8th we are not doing any shooting. Those are the "driving" days. We only going somewhere 6th and 7th which are Saturday and Sunday.
