I'm still planning on being there. In fact I have a reservation for a week afterwards at the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird Resort in SLC. For those who don't know, Moab is the Jeep rock climbing capital of the world, or so says my son-in-law who has broken every part of his jeep on trails in the area. If you're scared of cliffs and looking into deep canyons start practising. The road from Dead Horse Point to the canyon floor is a blast! if you have a hang glider the cliff jump off Dead Horse Point is a must, I'm thinking about bringing mine (don't tell my wife).

My vision of this GTG looks alot like organized chaos. My basic idea is to have an agenda of places to go each day with a morning outing and an evening outing. The weekend would look like this:

Friday: Early morning - on the road. Lunch & check in. Afternoon/evening outing: (Shoot the area, working the afternoon light. Get to final area and set up for last light and sunset. Head back to get sleep and food.)

Saturday: Morning outing (Up before the sun, get to are, set up before dawn, shoot and then follow the light, shooting through the morning hours.), Mid-day respite (Rest, eat, visit, on your own, scouting out areas if needed,) Afternoon/evening outing

Sunday: Morning outing, Mid-day respite (I plan on visiting the church of my choice), Afternoon/evening outing

Monday: Morning outing, Mid-day check out and on the road.

We have several of you who have indicated you know the area and great places for shooting. I̢۪d love to have you step forward to lead for a day and set the itinerary for the day.

We definitely want to shoot with the light. Many of the posts have given awesome places to see. We̢۪d like to spend lots of time shooting and less traveling or hiking, although some of both may be needed.

I̢۪m sure that we̢۪ll have people that join all the outings and some that want to break off on their own for a while. We̢۪ll also have some that can come for part of the time and others for the whole time.

We̢۪ll need to provide our own breakfast/snack foods. Moab should have plenty of eating establishments. We can play the meals by ear as to whether they̢۪ll be large group, small groups or solo.

So, how does this sound? Brent, NightShy, others; are you willing to take the lead for a day (or outing)?

Becky

I would suggest people making a must shoot list.

Delicate arch is a sunset shot, after a 2+ mile hike up a rock face trail. It's not an easy hike by any means.

Mesa arch is a get up when it's dark and get a spot before other photogs show kind of thing. Easy .5 mile trail.

Link to the campground through Google maps. Can give you a route and mileage to also. You can also take a close look around the area. Mot to mention find distance and time to other places you want to go from the campground.

For the airport, depending what kind of plane you are in...follow Hwy 191 up north a few miles (the map is a click and move map), and there is one right on the side of the road. :)

Going in or out of Moab, that Hwy 128 drive along the river is a good one. Good shots along the way. Can get some interesting color in the Colorado river also (probably brown due to run off at this time of year.)

I would like to go but it seems like it is in the middle of nowhere. What's the best city to fly in to? How many miles driving from there?
I'm affraid with flight, car rental and hotel it'll be over my budget.

I think people are car pooling from SLC. You should check with them.

There are daily shuttle flights from SLC to Moab. Not sure how much or maybe if in a flight package may not be too bad at all.

Nick, The nearest major airport is Salt Lake City. From there, it is just over 4 hours of driving to Moab. Unless it's rush hour, the drive is a fast moving feeway drive for the most part. Even in rush hour, there is only 20 miles or so that really bog down.

There are several of us coming from SLC that you probably could catch a ride with. (We do want a background check on anyone driving with us to rule out ax murderers, deviants and down-right obnoxious types - too long of a drive to deal with that. ;-) )

Cost-wise, You can check the flight, car: can car-pool or rental/about $120-150 + gas, and lodging: Cabins $40-45/night, Tent spot $18/night, Hotels $60+/night(would need car). Some are planning on sleeping in their vehicles to be ready for the light. They are welcome to pay the extra $5/night for the add-on to someone's cabin and still have the Campground/RV restroom/shower,etc facilities. It all depends on you and what you want/need for comfort.

TLL061 is also considering coming from Long Island. You might be able to split some costs with him, if he's interested.

It's an awesome place, and we're awesome people. Good luck in your decision.

AaahhhhH!!!! (that's a sound of joy) :)

This is right where I did my geology field camp (did I mention I'm a geologist and spent a lot of time traipsing around this area).

I *reallyreallyreally* want to do this.

Must ... try ... to ... schedule ... this ... in ....

I am in the middle of building (YES...BUILDING) a TearDrop Camper. I started it in Sept (not the greatest time to start to build one in CO with no garage, but...), and this thing is just such an occassion that I am building it for. Drive out to Utah (an inspiration), park near the site I want to shoot...up and out early. It is going to be 4-wheel road worthy also. Hoping to have it done by March, let alone May. And the way it looks...I have a week off at this planned time. WOOOHOOOOO!! (this thing has taken alot of time from my photography, but it will INCREASE it when I am done-hitch it up and roll!) :)

The Concept

Where I am at now. Bout to close her in and work on the electrical and interior and it has a Galley! For Food!...Beer, really! :)

Is anyone planning on camping out (tent)? Also, if I go as an "add on" to someone's reservation and just sleep in my pathfinder, will I have to make a reservation? :)

I'm so excited just reading this thread...
01/21/2006 11:13:03 PM · #114
When my decision is made, I will be bringing my backpacking gear (tent of course included), because you never know. And I love nothing better than hiking a few 10 miles and setting up my (one of 4) nice comfy tents! (no sarcasm in there either) :)

Rebecca, I'm in. Made my reservation today for one of the cabins.

I rally want to make so I need to figure out how many days to take off and so on. Can someone post more details such as where and what time we meet and were we go? This will help me figure out flight information.

Thanks

This would be a great trip for you Nick, and any east coaster for that matter. :D

Nick, It's a bit tough to give specific detail beyond what is in the 1st post, because people are coming in from all over. But here are the basics:
We'll drive to Moab on May 5th in the AM, arriving at our camp/cabin site between 12:00 and 2:00 PM, and check in. We'll have morning and afternoon outings, leaving at 2-3:00 in the afternoon and 5:00ish in the mornings. Most likely the Riverside Oasis RV Park will be out gathering spot for the outings. We'll finish up our last outing about 11:00AM on May 8th and drive back to our homes.

Salt Lake City is the nearest major airport. If you arrive on Thursday, May 4th (any time) and drive to Moab on Friday, May 5th, you would be able to join up with those traveling from SLC and caravan or carpool.

If you stay throughout the whole GTG and attend the last outing, it will take about 4-5 hours to drive back to SLC. You would probably arrive in SLC about 4:00-5:00 PM. You need just over an hour to check in before your flight at the SLC airport, plus 20-30 minutes if you are turning in a rental car. Therefore, you'd want a flight after 6:30-7:00 PM.

Obviously, you can come to all or part of the GTG.

Over the next few days I'll gather the many sites we've listed that we wish to shoot. We'll make a priority list, organize outings and strong-arm volunteers to lead the outings ;')

If you need more details, let me know what the details are and I'll try to help. It's a great place to be.

Thank you rjkstesch for the details. It is exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to figure out my vacation days, plane/car spendings and will post if I can make it on not. I think I will make it.

We need to decide our priorities for outings and who will lead them. Brent_Ward suggested we prioritize our wish lists, so I've gathered together the suggestions so far and some info about some of them. Please take a look and reply with the areas you'd most like to see, visit and shoot. Also post if you are willing to lead an outing to any of these or other areas.

Mesa Arch is in Canyonlands up north.

Fish and Owl Creek Canyons, Bullet Canyon, and Grand Gulch can be a bit more than day hikes (all day hikes).
We took 3 days to hike through Fish and Owl, so we could enjoy it. There are runners who do it in a day.
To the Perfect Kiva in Bullet Canyon is a precarious 5-6 mile hike (we did a 3 day, 36+ mile hike down to Pollys Pasture and back out). We made it there in under 3 hours. Hiking back up and out SUCKS!!!! But it is awesome!! Turkey Pen ruin is down Kane/Grand Gulch, also. Lots of smaller graineries and ruins throughout these canyons.
Depends on how much you want to walk, or staying overnight (need permits for that).

Hi all, and Becky many thanks to you, what wonderful job you're doing for everybody. I have a reservation for a cabin at Riverside. I have been in the Moab area about 50x in the last 20 years but really never as a photographer (until July 2005 when I was introduced to DPC ... thanks jrtodd and naldslc). This will be an incredible learning trip for me and I want to go anywhere, there are so many choices and I am not a very good decision-maker. I know you all are looking for replies including a "wish list" but all I can say is I am ready to follow (my husband and I can probably better offer suggestions if we are familiar with the area once we are there). Now, if only I can afford a new camera before the trip, my Kodak "point and shoot" will really limit my learning about technique from all of you DPC'ers.
