Oh man, I'm crazy busy until after May 13, then I might have a couple of days, especially if a weekend is considered. Have we decided on a date. I don't recall seeing a date decided on in the thread yet. I'll go anywhere down there. May is a nice time with lots of flowers blooming!
Thanks Becky for the heads up to this thread!

Oops. I need to read more carefully:
Decisions made so far (1/5/06):
Date: The dates are: Friday, May 5th - Monday, May 8th. Traveling to the site will be May 5th AM, and heading home will be May 8th PM.
I still might be able to make a few of these days. Here's hoping!

My fingers are crossed that I can make it. During the last 6 months I've visited Canyonland, Arches, Capital Reef, Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley and many indian ruins in the four corners areas. Anywhere is great. I think that maybe Moab is a great central point especially if several areas are in need of photographic exploration. The whole area is a wonderland of photographic possibilities.

Phantom,
We're cheering for you to make it, too. I'll put you down for a Moab vote on the 1st entry of this post. |

Here's a pic I took this week in Southern Utah. Lots of hidden Indian ruins
Oh by the way this is near Monticello Utah, about 60 south of Moab

Here's a pic I took this summer at Capital Reef. So many great places to go, Moab, capital Reef or even Monticello.

Here's one from Cedar Mesa near Blanding. Didn't do to well in the Free Study challenge but I like it.

My vote would be for the Lake Powell/Escalante area as just about everything else is too long of a drive for me coming from the Phoenix area.
Don't put much weight in my vote though, I'm listing my status as questionable. I doubt I'll have vacation time to spare and it's a long drive for a weekend. |

I've been all over the areas in southern Utah. I recommend a place that is easy for everyone coming to get to. Many of the nat'l parks have been mentioned, and they're always good choices. Moab is a nice place because we'd be near many different places both in parks and outside of national parks (Arches, Canyonlands, Dead Horse point, and some groovy places that aren't on the map). Moab is also a good choice because it is home of the best green chili in North America (so the restaurant says) and many nifty art shops. Moab is also on some main roads and is close enough to CO that we might get some folks from there, too.
Capitol Reef is probably my favorite national park, but it is a bit harder to get to.
Zion is another good choice, since it's fairly close to I-15 and is easily accessible to folks, even in Las Vegas. Plus in Zion, we could go to Angels Landing and perhaps some slot canyons.
My votes would be for Moab or Zion.

Ok Rebecca you can change me from a maybe to an "in". Decided I could make the long drive from Washington State! I vote for Moab at either of the places with cabins.
Thanks for your efforts.
edit: The fact that we are on our 22nd consecutive day of rain had something to do with my change of heart. LOL

I hope you do, and Marianne too, I would so much like to meet you two! I'm not entirely sure I can make it, but I'm going to try.
I've been to Arches. I've never seen cliff-dwellings though, and would just love to see some.

Rub it in... We are approaching 100 consecutive days without rain!!! 85 days and counting and nothing in the 10 day forecast. |

Ouch - Hope you get rain soon. Look what is happening in Texas and Oklahoma.
Besides we'll want a good wildflower bloom in the spring! |

Beautiful area. I have been there a couple of times.
Wish I could join you but I just can't bring myself to drive that far for a weekend....and well I hate flying.

I'm hoping that everyone who wanted to express an opinion on the destination has put in their opinion.
And the winner is............. Moab!!!!
Actually, I don't think we can go wrong. We might just have to have another GTG at Capitol Reef next year, however, this year is MOAB, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and landmarks there abouts!
Those of you who like to do such things, please check out places to stay that accomodate the mattress set and the camping set. There are two links in the 1st post that look pretty good. Put your opinions up and let's decide, so we can book the place.
Congratulations! It's a Moab GTG!

oh man, I would LOVE to go back to Moab. I was there in the summer and spent several days at Arches and Canyonlands (and several afternoons in the air-conditioned $5 matinee movie theater!) The desert country is breathtaking, stark, and imposing. Y'all who can attend are lucky. |

I'm being a nitpicker and easily could be wrong so feel free to ignore this but I believe that, though partly on the border, most of Monument Valley is on the Arizona side. That includes the Mintons in the above picture. The tall rocks in the far background, I think, are on the Utah side. :) I think! :)

Bump... Any preferences as to where we stay in Moab?
There are a couple links in the 1st entry. Check them out and let me know.

Moab...also a good choice
We always stay at the Apache, not the best place and I'm not sure I would recommend it. On the North side of town there is the Best Inn and the Stupid 8. In town there is the 2 Best Westerns and the Bowen isn't bad. Camping close to town at Slickrock or even better at Arches or in Cayonlands.
