Hello Folks!
I am getting ready to process some pix of Raul Midon, a musician, that performed for a fundraiser that I shot for. The venue was fairly dark & as a result I used a high ISO & got LOADS of noise along with some great pix.
My question is, do folks filter noise before or after editing? BTW, I am using Neat Image.
Thanks in Advance! |

I always do a very light neat image after I've brightened and color corrected - if you sharpen THEN neat image, it leaves artifacts. If you NI then sharpen, it leaves far less.

Can't you neat image on an adjustment layer in Photoshop? I thought NI PS plug-in had the ability to do that. If so, just apply your noise reduction whenever you want. |

I always find that I add light fake grain back in after I used NI, am I the only one?

ok, so lemme see here... make minor adjustments such as levels then NI, after which major adjustments can be made.
Is this right, mav? Do you go back to NI after you're done with everything? |

Just use NI as soon as you open the photo...works the best that way.

ok, i did a test.
I edited 2 shots with NI 1st & then everything else. Then I edited a shot in PS (everything included, levels & sharpening) & then NI. I've found that NI LAST actually yeilds better results. Sharpening after NI causes A LOT of distortion.
I would post 'em but I'm thinking about submitting one of the shots for the best of 2005 challenge.
Any other opinions out there based on experience?

I'm a strong believer in NI at or near the end of the workflow. I do make a separate layer for it, so I can fade it in and out, and I do do it in several sections sometimes, except that since I got the 20D I almost never use NI anymore. But I use it on other folks' work :-) Anyway back when i did use it, I found I bot bad weirdness if I used NI first then did levels and hue/sat and such ovwe it. I'll often add a fadable USM layer over the NI btw.
