why exaclty would it matter if it were a Dell or not? Shouldn't you be more worried about the video card that you have interfacing it?

Can't speak to the monitor, but I have a dell desktop--a close to 2 year old Dimension 8300. It's my second Dell, and I have no complaints--very reliable (neither this one nor my previous one that I had for >4 years ever broke down). They are also very easy to upgrade. I've installed video cards, second DVD drives, second hard drives, and more RAM to both PCs with no issues whatsoever. Needless to say, my next PC will also be a Dell. |

yes...but am curious about Dell quality. They have an xps600 unit with dual processors and running dual 7800 graphics cards. Just wanted some general feedback about them. |

Some of the Dells seem to be pretty good hardware-wise. The low-end models with a non-standard power supply, and especially the small form factor ones, are not as good. The fairly high-end mid/full-tower ones and the workstations should be good. However, they do load all their systems with a lot of adware and bloated software you don't need - it's a good idea to uninstall just about everything that comes installed on them, and then run Ad-aware and Spybot on it.
If you're fairly confident in your ability to install things, and you're patient enough to learn, consider building the system yourself. You'll have to do some research to find out which components are best for you, and then do a little reading on how to assemble the system. But in the end, you'll learn quite a bit, and you'll have a nice, custom system and the satisfaction gained from building it yourself.

Oh, I just though you were speaking specifically about monitor performance with Dells, not general Dell performance, in which case, the video card that you obtained with your system would matter more than the system.
Other issues would be major uses. Video gaming? Video Editing? 2d/3d picture editing/rendering?
THe dual 7800's are more a gaming thing, they will not get you any better display quality or rendering/photosho times. The dual processor is the key piece for that.
If you wan't a beast that will run PS/Bryce3d/AfterEffects with as much alacrity as it can run the latest FPS (doom, unreal, whatever) then Dell is a good choice, and the dual proc/dual card setup also. But I could probably point you to VoodooPC or Alienware for better gaming rigs.

more concerned about the photo editing..i can always play the games on my current pc. I will be deducting this as an expense....so it needs to be photography driven. What about the dell 24 inch display...anybody know anything about it? |

I'd really focus more on the workstation offerings from Dell then if you're going for photo editing. Their support is supposed to be pretty good, but a lot has been outsourced over the years, so who knows.
I found a review of the Dell 24' at Tom's Hardware against a few others of similar specs. They like the LaCie and NEC 21 incher's better. There's also Round Two with the Apple Cinema display in that one.
Yes, after round two, the still stuck with the NEC and LaCie, instead of the Dell or Mac specifically for photo editing.

I love my ViewSonic VP201b. That's 20.1" 1600x1200
I would get 2 if I had a real use for the second one.
