If I had to buy a new DSLR thats the choice I'd make. Dollar for dollar its the best bang for the buck right now.

congrats. I'm saving for mine right now. Local shop has it sitting there waiting for me.

I keep hearing it calling my name...I can't the voices out of my head.

Sitting there....sitting there?

Indiana...hmmmmm....I could drive there in a few hours. So many people all over the world have been waiting, anxiously for months for theirs (including pre-release orders)...myself included.

At this point I doubt I'll have it before the New Year.

i was 3rd on the list (preordered Nov 1st)
they received 2 first time around , now 2 more
with 10 more on the waiting list ....
i paid an extra 25$ for del. tomorrow (rather than next Wed.)

i guess i better shoot some B&W, probably will not pick up the film body for a couple weeks ;)

Ok Nikoners (is that a word, or did I just coin one? :P), I've never owned a dSLR and am saving for the d200...just a couple more extra days and I'll have it. My question is, which would be the best lens for me to get if I can only have one lens for a long, long time?

And Ralph, congrats on your new toy!!!

Nikonians would be the phrase. Lens choice is a hard one. It really depends on many factors. What type of shooting will you do most? How much will you have to spend?

Buy the fastest and best quality lens you can afford to start. I started with the kit lens for a D-70, 18-70mm, which was a good range for general shooting but not long enough for my style. I tried a Tamron 28-300 for a while and found it handy but the qulaity really was not all that good. I found I either needed very long lenses or wide angle. So I now shoot mainly three lenses. Nikon 12-24 for landscape, Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR for general use and a Tamron 200-500 for telephoto nature photography.

Decide what you will shoot the most and then post that here. You will get plenty of suggestions.

Not owning one yet...makes me no expert but what I've heard, you might need better than average glass so I assume the old D70 kit lens (18-70mm) might not cut it.

I've read and been told by a few very experienced Nikon D70/200 shooters, that my Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 should do just fine. I think it's my best all around lens...so I'm happy that I won't need to buy more glass.

Outside of that it's a very popular lens here at DPC, so consider it without question, if your shooting style requires a short-midrange zoom.

Sell the camera to Pawdrix for 200 dollars over the price you paid (he's HUNGRY) and use the money to buy a 350xt and a LOT of glass :-)

if i could have only ONE lens (of <500$ variety)
i would probably take a 60mm Macro f2.8
it is a bit soft at >4meters but i don't tend to shoot that way

if i could have TWO lenses i'd take 24mm F2.8 next

if i could have ONE lens of the >$1000 type 17-55mm F2.8 which is one really really cool lens....

beyond that
105mm micro (and/or what is on my wish list the 200mm micro)

I'm a newbie as you can see from my profile. However, I know where my interests lie. Right now, I would really like to do more scenic shots--landscapes and animals. I think as I get more comfortable with photography, I would eventually like to photograph people and their faces... :) And thanks for the info to everyone. If you could please PM me, I would appreciate it. I feel badly because I do not mean to hijack this thread and take away from Ralph's celebration!

Again, congrats Ralph! :)

grrrrrrrr....!

Hey have fun and post some pix asap. I've been on the sidelines here too long...I need to be involved in someway and actively drooling over new D200 images seems to be quite satisfying. Oh, and speaking about how it feels seems to soothe me as well.

Cheers
