My daughter was home visiting for the holidays and asked when Iwas going to get a new camera so she could have the Canon G1 - guess she thought I would pass the 300D off to her Dad, and then give her the G1 that I first started out with. She really just wants a point and shoot, not a DSLR. She was disappointed when I told her that even if I bought the 20D in the next year, I would not be giving up my 300D, but would use both.
Anyhow, her birthday is in February and I want to get her a good P&S. Would like to keep the cost under $300. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There's a ton of options under $300. A friend of mine just bought a Canon A520 (< $300 CDN). She just does snaps of the dog and family and is quite happy.

If your daughter is looking for more zoom then some of the Kodaks are in that price range.

She's looking for something better than the HP315 Photosmart she is using now. She will probably use it to take pics of her art work more than anything else.

A 4x zoom is probably plenty then. I think you can do a questionaire in dp review to help narrow down the choices then check any reviews available.

I recently got an Olympus SP-310 to keep in my purse and have been very pleased with it. In addition to being high res (7 megapixels) and good general quality, it's got some nice extras like the ability to shoot in RAW (using RAW slows down the write speed quite a bit, but it's rare in P&Ss)and the ability to accept adapter lenses, plus its nice and compact (comparible to or maybe even a tad smaller than many of the Canon Powershot A-Series cameras). I got it from zipzoomfly for a little under $300 and it has a big brother (8mp, w/ flash bracket) available for a little more.

For Christmas I bought my son the Canon A610 and I LOVE the pics he's been taking with it!! They are fabulous for a p&s. I have even considered getting one for myself to carry around in my purse! It was $299 .. good luck in your search!

I just bought my 16 and 14 year old these for Christmas:

Fuji Finepix A360

They both love them! The 16 year old wanted it more for the movies *(skateboarding, etc) the 14 year old wanted it more for the photos (girlfriend, etc). The setup comes with a 16 XD card (you can pick up a 256 for $30, not sure if theyre still on sale) little tripod, carrying case, recharger with rechargeable batteries plus 2 regular batteries so that you don' have to wait for the rechargeables!

PS: 16 yr old is mine, 14 yr old is BF's....all kids are my kids :)

We wanted a little camera to keep in the car/purse.

We found a Canon Powershot A75 at CompUsa - it was an ex-display model for a reduced price. Since there was no manual, software, or any accessories (which we didn't need anyway), I did some more bargaining (and eyebatting) and ended up getting it for $80 incl. tax and full warranty.

It might be worth your while to check out cameras that are "on the way out", so to speak...... superceded by the next model, but still a perfectly usable camera.

I am obsessed with Canon, so I would recommend any canon camera, like the sd400 which is about $300. But, I just bought the Kodak v550 and I must admit, I do like the photos it takes, I got it for $300 at costco. I tried others and wasn't happy with them, especially the Casio Exlim, it's junk. The Kodak is great for close ups, really has macro on the thing unless you zoom. Anyway, it would do a good job for paintings, but again, canon has always impressed me. Torn, I know.

I bought my daughter the Fuji Finepix E550 about a year ago. It can now be had for well under $300. (B&G Photo, for example) - My daughter loves hers!
