I'm new here and maybe I missed a poll or discussion about this earlier but I think it would be really helpful to me to have other options besides checking "This comment was helpful"
let me explain being a beginner myself I don't feel qualified to comment technically on photos unless I see a problem I've tackled and conquered myself so I often times I make a comment in the congratulatory way and not ment as anything more useful than applause. I don't expect this to be helpful to anyone but I was moved by the craftsmanship and artistry to say something. I'd like to know the photog got my comment, but to say it's helpful to anything other than the ego would be an era. Also a few comments addressed to me were I felt so off the mark that they missed entirely the whole point of what I was saying with my pic. To call them helpful would be wrong since I so strongly disagree. I think to give more options would encourage the kind of helpful criticism designed to make your photographs better and still agknowlage comments that don't quite help but are nice to receive like applause

Heres what I suggest

1 This comment was helpful

2 thank you for your interest

3 I disagree

I can't believe no one replied to this. What a great idea! So much easier than PMing the person explaining yourself/pic.

I thought the helpful button was a great addition to DPC2. I've changed my mind completely. I think we'd be better off without it. I think there are too many people hung up on leaving helpful comments. I think it would be more prudent to put a "PM" button at the top corner or "reply" or something like that. I think it would start bringing a little more honesty to the comment part of it if we quit keeping stats.

I liked it better before when comments were anonymous until the end of the challenge, for the most part. After the challenge was done, I'd get 5-10 PM's thanking me for the comment. That meant a lot more than someone just checking the box. Especially when some people check all the boxes, even the ones that say "nice shot" or something similar. If someone leaves me a 7+, that says "nice shot" enough to me. I don't think I need the pat on the back comments unless there is some aspect of the photo you find particularly intriguing or compelling. That's not helpful to me. I probably wouldn't respond to that either saying thanks for the comment. I give this kind of superficial comment to the exceptional photos, but normally I will put what I found was compelling / intriguing to me.

Overall, the "helpful" check is relatively meaningless. The only time I get concerned about it is when I'm writing critiques or exceptionally long comments. If I have a lot to say, then I want to know if it was good advice or not. As we progress, I'm not so sure it isn't a bad idea to show the comments to the voters during voting. I think it would turn ugly if we did though, for the record, because we are choosing a winner. But for the helpful-learning part that everyone claims to be striving for, it would probably be beneficial to the photographer.

Just my thoughts. - Bob

sometimes a photo just 'wows' you so much that you are speechless and all you can do is type one word: WOW.

hehe.

haven't been here that long, but I think separating the 'helpful' and 'thanks' sounds good. sometimes people just have praise, other times people are full of constructive(hopefully) criticism.

anyway, I really appreciate the people who took the time to email me. :o)
