My brother-in-law has about $200-$300 worth of Sony credit card points that he would like to use toward a dSLR. He's planning to spend about $600-$800 in addition to the points. Any suggestions?

I don't think Sony makes a dSLR do they? I thought the Sony DSC-R1 was about as close as they come, maybe that'd work for him and its in the price range.

Check it on DPReview here

That is correct, Sony does not make a DSLR.

good luck using sony credit card points for something the two companies may or may not produce within the next year or two though ;) Sony is known for it's sensors, so this might just mean that KM has first exclusive rights to any new Sony sensors.

What it doesn't mean is that Sony has a DSLR, they still don't.

Tell him to keep saving and maybe, maybe SONY will release a DSLR.

You can get a high end prosumer digital camera that offers many features found in DSLRs but that's about it.

Also, ask your brother-in-law what he means by an DSLR?

A lot of people when they mention SLR think it means either a) a pro camera or b) a camera with removable lenses. This is not the case.

There are other types of cameras with removable lenses that are not SLRs. In fact, there are some SLR type cameras with fixed lenses. So if what he really wants is a camera with removable lenses. (Something SONY doesn't make) than he'll have to look elsewhere. If by DSLR, he really means an upper level prosumer digital camera. Well, SONY makes a few of these that are reported to be half decent.

They will be releasing the camera in february, same Sensor that Nikon D200 has, with body-integral AS. Expect Sony/KM to get in on Zeiss Lovin'

Thanks for the input so far. I think what he's primarily looking for is a Sony camera that's going to allow him to take pictures that can be enlarged to about 16x20 with decent resolution. I guess it doesn't necessarily have to be a dSLR. Any recommendations?

Just my 2 cents... I shot with a F717 for a couple years, still have it and love it! The 828 is its equivilant and for the price, an excellent camera.

I second that the 717 takes some really nice shots. I actually like it better than the 828's I've seen.

What it is NOT good for is any time of action shot. It does have it's limitations, but I've been happy with mine for 2.5 years.

As Count posted, the Sony DSC-R1 would be the obvious choice. While not a DSLR, it has a sensor nearly as large as many DSLRs, and larger than a few. Image quality is excellent, noise is not as good as the current Canon DSLRs but much better than most of the small-sensor digicams.

I used the Sony F505v (which was the one before and replaced by the 717)for a couple of year. It was a great camera and too wonderful pictures. If he's just starting out with digital the current one in this line would be a great starter.

Tell your friend to wait until late february/early march.

Without a question. Wait. In early march, ask the question again.

Patience will pay off.
