Ok, so i got about $800 for Xmas. I NEED A NEW CAMERA!
What should i get?
If i wait a month, i could add about $200 to the pile, so i'd have $1000.

I want a Canon....but other than that....

Would you be happy with another point&shoot camera, or do you have your heart set on a DSLR?

i guess a DSLR...i need it to get me through grad school.

Considering your budget, I'd guess that you'll need a secondhand rebel. Just don't forget - the camera is only the beginning.... the lens fever is what sends you to the poor house afterwards.

i'm already in the poor house as it is, but...we can borrow lenses for canons at school, and i assume i could use the same lenses from my Canon SLR? if so, that would be amazing since i already have a bunch of those!

Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XT 8.0MP SLR Digital Camera Digital Rebel XT 18-55 Kit $949 at Best buy...

will they fit? Ummm... I better stay out of this one. There are plenty of people on DPC that actually know what they're talking about on this.
I don't trust my "knowledge" on this...... would hate to give completely wrong advice :-(

I've seen the Rebel 350 kit on Dell for as low as 699. Keep an eye out on the deal sites. Also try pricegrabber.com.

Are they EF mount lenses? If so yess they will work just fine!

Lisa, don't forget... you won't be happy with just the ONE lens for very long. That kit lens isn't bad, but it is limited, you WILL want something longer, too.

As long as they were EOS mount lenses, and depending on what Canon dSLR you bought. If it was the 300D or 350D (Rebel or Rebel XT), then they'll take both the EOS EF and EF-S lenses.

I'd wait til the next major photography expo before I purchase. Feb or April I believe.

By doing this, you'll be able to see if there's anything new in your price range (like a 20D update, 30d?), and you'll also see current bodies start to get sold for lower prices by people wanting to upgrade.

the rebel xt is a nice camera, but depending on what you plan to shoot, you may find it limiting, and if you want it to last you a few years, you may find yourself outgrowing it too quickly.

I would take a serious look at the Olympus E-500.. The build quality is much better than say the Canon rebel XT, and if you can be happy with ISOs 400 or lower it's as good as any dSLR in its class. The cost of admission is also much lower. It recieved the highly coveted "highly recommended" rating at dpreview.com.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens is $75 and one of the best lenses to have in your arsenal in addition to the kit lens. I think the 3 phobia winners all used a 50mm.
