Anyone here into Urban Exploration? I've seen some really great pictures on some sites and have always been curious, but I'm just to chicken. |

What is Urban Exploration?

Sorry, that might help ;)
From the Wiki on it:
Urban exploration, urbex or UE, is the examination of the normally unseen or off-limits parts of human civilization. Urban exploration is also commonly referred to as Infiltration, although some people consider Infiltration to be more closely associated with the exploration of active or inhabited sites. In the USA, it may also be referred to as reality hacking, "urban spelunking", and "urban caving."
Do a search on google and you find TONS of sites and webrings about it.

I think this is the original and definitive source on the subject.

My brother used to do b&e's on abandoned sites. He's got some amazing photos from back in the day.
I'm a much more tame urban explorer heheh. I don't break in, and I rarely enter. :)
I do, however, consider myself to be an urban explorer - a goal of mine, however unattainable, has been to walk every street on the island of manahattan at least once. For such a small island, it's a HUGE ISLAND! I love exploring the city. And there ain't toooo much to be afraid of these days. I'm actually more afraid of Times Square than I am of industrial waste(lands) in Greenpoint. ;)

THAT'S THE SITE I first saw on the subject but haven't been able to find again.
Time does some wonderfully amazing things to some of our creations. I love to see stuff decayed and worn out an try to imagine being a worker who used that area when it was brand new... did they ever think it would eventually look like this? Was this place that is so "new and exciting" to me just boring an mundane to them back then?
It really get's my imagination and curiosity going. It's like hidden history all around us. |

Oh I've occassionally been guilty of breaking into abandoned buildings, but since I live in the sticks can it still be considered URBAN exploration? |

If you want to take photos of urban decay, the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA, is open April-November as a museum.
A big + is that tripod use is OK.

Read the book Creepers by David Morrell. He references this site. It'll make you think twice about exploring. |

Hmmm. I'm too law-abiding to go breaking into buildings, and thanks to the price of real estate in our town, there aren't many abandoned buildings, but I'm a great proponent of walking around behind buildings to see what's there -- it's often a lot more interesting than the front.

for a great bunch of accounts of urban exploration, check out Twin Cities-based Action Squad:
//www.actionsquad.org/
They find caves, slime molds, strange fish, steam-filled tunnels, and ancient mills! They dodge the cops, dodge murderous bums, and nearly suffocate to death on methane gas!
it's riveting stuff, really, and quite well written...

I do a good deal of this type of photography in Mobile and sometimes in Montgomery when a get up there. I love this stuff.
This image was taken in an abandoned glass factory in Montgomery.
