I have decided it̢۪s not worth using even the most powerful NiMH AA batteries in my Canon 500EX flash because I still have to change them more than once during a wedding and don̢۪t want to risk missing a shot. Would I be better off going with an external battery or transistor pack such as the CP-E3 or something else? I want to keep E-TTL so a giant manual flash is out of the question. Any tips at all greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'm only going off what I've heard, but supposedly you can get disposable lithium AA batts that last much longer then even the best NIMH. Might be worth a check.

THe 'proper' solution is a battery pack. Many companies make them - quantum is one, al jacobs is the one i'd try first - the best value and he's a real person you can actually talk to (he frequents the FM boards).

You can run just the flash or the flash and camera off a battery - depends on how many cables you want hanging about.
