Pay no attention to anyone who, without asking what your photographic needs are, or knowing anything else about YOU, says "buy THIS camera." Bottom line, there is really no bad choice in modern DSLRs. As Prof_Fate stated, you are really buying a system, and over time you'll spend more on lenses than bodies. That said, both the Canon and Nikon systems cover the needs of the vast majority of photographers very well, and each system has strengths and weaknesses.
For a first DSLR for someone who's relativley serious about photography, you're looking at the righ range of cameras, IMO. The D100 is still a fine cam, but the D200 will be a significant step forward. The 20D should soon be replaced (announcement may come at PMA this Winter). That one might be one to watch, if you have a little time to wait.
Once you have a list of two or three cams, get each of them into your hands and play with them, see which one fits best, which controls seem "right" to you. Do study performance reviews, but don't let those reviews be your only input. Good luck on your decision!

I assume the exact same will apply with the D200 (as soon as it freakin get's here)...It'll be painful for a while but I'll work it through. The benefits will far, far outweigh the struggles.

Pedro! Manny! How are you guys coming along with the D200

Manny will end up being the spokesperson for the D200 around here! I don't think I have ever seen him take a bad pic!

As far as learning the camera, especially the higher end DSLR's...nothing could be truer..

I told the guys I work with that I feel like a n00b all over again whne I got the D2x. The biggest difference with upper end DSLR's is the very light in camera sharpening and the anti-aliasing filters used.

There is so much leeway with what you can do with camera's like the Canon and Nikon DSLR's you really have to pay attention to all aspects so much closer.....white balance, sharpening, file types, proper exposure. Reminds me of my neighbor with his old ferrari...that thing is very complicated but very satisfying when you know how to handle it.

I'm not talking about Phil's review (Or the lack of it), I'm talking about the user reviews. I've seen a lot of hot pixel comments and well I've had bad experience with hot pixels, so just the name of it makes me shutter.

The D200 is really a promising camera, but not right now. We should all wait for the later batches where the few defaults will be fixed, and hopefully adobe will release a new version accepting D200 NEFs.
