I got great suggestions last time I posted my surfer shots and would appreciate any feedback you have time to give. I have photoshop and I am learning it but I am not proficient enough to edit my photos. Any suggestions/comments are so welcomed. I am including this last one because it was such a surprise to me. If this is too many photos to post here please let me know... I am still a real novice. Thank you

HI Maggie! :)
I know photoshop is expensive ... but there is a program that is free and does everything that PS does :)
there are some wonderful places on the web to help learn Photoshop :) and you can always ask in these forums any question you might have :)
You have a wonderful start with your photos :) I really like sunset surfer 1 and think the one with the person just under the wave is awesome :)
btw I'm Di

I've taken the liberty of photoshopping the most dynamic of these 4 images for you. Just one way to go. Difficult to work with such lo-res image though. One thing, when I blow it up I see a squarish, underlying interference pattern that suggests these images are pulled from a scan rather than a digital original. It's hard for me to say, but it doesn't look like work from a 20D...

Hello Bear,
Thank you for the great editing, you really know your photoshop.... and now I am hoping you can help me find out why my image degrades when I upload it... I do use the space saver mode...... I can send you the original file that has all the info in it and it will of course verify that the pic was shot with a 20D.... also, one of the questions I have is that I am shooting at the large/fine format which as you know is the highest resolution jpeg format.. and when I look at the information attached to the file or bring the image up in photoshop, it states the image is at 72 dpi resolution.. is this the resolution the image should be at... I can change the resolution in photoshop (without resampling). Should I be changing the resolution to higher (like 267) before I upload it to my portfolio? |

Don't worry about the dpi number. You should be saving at about 640 pixels on the longest side for this site. When you save the image save through Save for Web and Optimize to file size at 150 k.

I haven't seen the original, but is this supposed to be an improvement? This image is way over sharpened and the contrast and saturation are outrageous.

Okay, maybe I'll post this here too.
Okay, here's what I had time to do so far (stinking boss keeps walking over)
Original
Edited
I punched up the yellows, and 2 sections of cyan's, and slid the darks to teh center a bit on levels. Light USM, have to be careful with small versions ;O)

I think that was a glow effect, not sharpening. And to each his own dude. If the OP doesn't like they won't use the idea.

Well I had a quick go at it too.
------------Original------------------Edited-----------
(click on each, then switch between
them in the taskbar to see changes)
Adjusted WB, make adjustments in the shadow/Highlights, softened the water in the background, made some changes to the color levels between foreground & background, some sharpening (lots of artifacts to begin with), some dodge & burning, fixed the skin color and repaired the lower hand a bit.
Watse of time? Nah - fun to fix stuff. |

I think the pictures you have posted show good composition and a generally nice quality. You need to learn your tools more I think. You didn't post what mode you shot these in, but I think you may have chosen an auto mode. Higher-end digital cameras usually leave things pretty flat and non contrasty (in my experience, not a rule), specifically so that you have the freedom to choose what to do with it in post processing. Learn your cam, and learn PS better. Your pictures are pretty good as is. Just a little PS work on the ones we tried really brought out some vibrant colors to go along with your good compositions.

I had a version that looked very much like Brad's, then I ran it the heck through gothic glow to get some "effects" to it :-) The posted version of the original was so soft (and of course lo-res) that there are limits to what can be done with it. I'm sorry you find my messing around so outrageous, but I'm a little bummed to receive such a negative message on Xmas Eve :-(
Peace on earth, goodwill to men, friend :-)

Another edited one.
I added a glow effect on this too, but first I upped the Yellows, Cyans, and Greens, and lowered the reds to keep the skin tones more natural.

How dare you post such a monstrous abomination of an image?
You have brought shame on the entire DPC community.
And no, I won't be posting my PS attempt - I just came here to make you feel bad about yours.
Merry Christmas! :) |

And this was such a positive Christmas message that the OP PM'd me about it. I don't really remember her asking you to "improve" anything. The OP was asking for advice on how to improve the images.

Okay, Mr. Cranky Pants
The OP learned from that "un-positive" message, and in another thread spawned by it, that she was resizing stuff incorrectly, and has now learned a new skill.
Criticising bear for trying to help with a photo that was a little OOF/blurry (and you hadn't seen it) was uncalled for.
It is also a general thing around here to play with others photos for educational purposes, I don't see anything wrong with what bear did.

Uncalled for? For bear to critique the image without any input on how to improve it other then his shiny example was OK, but for me to critique his version is sacrilege. Piss off. Oh, and Merry Christmas.

Nice selctive reading.
You critiqued without seeing the original that he was trying to fix. And who ever said you couldn't edit without asking? Is that a new rule? Sheesh. If you can't see your actions as a little rude, whatever, I can't change your mind. Sorry that you're obviously having a bad day, hope your Christmas goes better soon.

No dude, I saw the other less "dynamic" of the images and none looked as bad as the edited version. And yes I do consider it bad form to edit someone's image without being asked to and without explaining the steps you took to get where you were. Bear's post was negative.
