I am thinking of buying this lens. While I realize it isn't the fastest lens out there it is affordable. Does anyone own this lens and if so what are your thoughts. Also, I am open to other suggestions.

Thanks

I use this lens as my standard walking around lens. I have shot perhaps 7,000 photos using it and I love it. Much better than the kit lens. Although it's not as fast as I might want, the VR gives me an extra stop or two. There may be other good lenses out there but I can only opine on what I use. This is it. Recommended.

I know Digital Quixote owns this lens and uses it for a travel lens. You might want to check some his latest China shots in his portfolio to see what you think.

I've been thinking of this one for a travel lens or maybe the new 18-200 VR that is just coming out. I'm waiting to see the reviews of it first.

Good luck.

I've owned two examples of the lens. It's a really good MP lens if you can get over the slow speed, and it has the tendency to flare (of course it has 15 elements). I find it interesting that Nikon went back to the 72mm threads also, so I had to keep a 72-77 step up ring on it most of the time.

So then the general opinion would be that this lens is better than the kit lens?

I have this lens and use it a lot. I love the VR function which compensates for the slow speed. Now that new 18-200 has come out...I think this lens may come down in price. I don't have any complaints with it. I havent found the sweet spot for the lens yet. The kit lens isnt bad either.
