We don't ask you to place the photos in order, just give each a score. The photo and the topic are all you need for that -- you don't need to have seen all the photos.

This "ranking" of photos is precisely why I feel seeing the thumbs ahead of time is an unfair influence. If we were supposed to rank all the photos from best-to-worst then it would make sense, but when you are giving each a numerical score, it shouldn't matter -- we are not "grading on a curve."

If you hand in a test at school, you expect the tyeacher to grade you fairly, without being influenced by someone else's test results. That's the type of voting system we have here.

The idea of random presentation is pretty fundamental to the use of this system, since we only require you to vote on 20% of the entries; those entries should be a random selection, different for each person. Cherry-picking which entries to vote on defeats that randomness.

Most undoubtedly, this is my feeling exactly, and I don't doubt that most of the others on the site feel the same.

Dang, that's one of the most beautifully twisted/redundant sentences I've come across lately :-) I love it!

This is not a fair comparison since everyone in the class could receive an "A". DPC only allows one "A" in the form of a virtual blue ribbon.

I do agree with what you want the site to be about. I feel the "subscriber ranking" does thwart the process of constructive growth. I also feel that peoples scoring is skewed as to whether or not they have a submission but that is another point. I completely agree with your point about the thumbnails. If the thumbnails were eliminated it would greatly help to reduce the overall "subscriber ranking". Once I vote, I see the thumbnail page listing pics with an 8, a 7, etc. This sorting of images IS ranking. The site is constructed in such a way as to promote ranking of pictures.

I do not vote by ranking one against another, I have multiple pics in the 8, 7, 6, 5 ... and they are there on their own merit. The thumbnail images AFTER I have voted on the pics allows me to compare entries and judge in my mind whether one is better than another. If you want to eliminate your subscribers from overall judging you have to eliminate the process by which it is possible.

This is kind of a silly thread in my opinion since I do not think anything is wrong with the site. I do not want to see the thumbnails go away, the voting changed, comments required, or the "ribbons" removed. I like it, my one vote is do not change it.

is there any kind of statistics we can look at that will show what percentage of PARTICIPATING members are voting? call me crazy, but i think that if you are entering a challenge you should be expected to vote at least a fraction of what you are entering, like say...if you want to enter a challenge, you have to have voted on 25% or 50% at LEAST to enter? that would give more votes for the challenges, and would give a more fair vote. not that the votes are not fair now, great images are winning, and deserving to win. but this is a community, and if the community is not participating, it will not work out. as for requiring a comment for every vote cast, get real. i really think that's what the critique corner is for, and they do a fantastic job...i request them for everything i've ever entered, and learn so much from their write-ups.

i also agree on the idea of either taking away the thumbnails, or making it open up a random picture when clicked on.

the site is made to teach people that lack in photographic skills. if you look at a picture and think it sucks, and don't vote...how will that help them? my photography sucked when i first started, but it was from great people like that are on this site and others that helped me out to where i am today, which i still have a long way to go.

voting is definitely not the funnest thing in the world, but it's a necessary job that needs to be on everyone's priority list that cares about this site.

i think it should be a requirement. everyone expects votes, that's how it runs. you want to win challenges, and that requires voting.

thanks :)
