Hooo boy... that could really make things interesting! Wonder if they would come in with an AF version of the 21/2.8 Distagon?

It could also be a dig version of the Ikon, or something, not necessarily lenses. |

I did hear AGES ago from a friend at SONY that they were planning on releasing a body with a ZEISS mout on it, I heard it was supposed to be a 12MP body roughly designed around the old CONTAX N1D, and just recently I heard that the CONTAX company has stopped producing digital cameras so Zeiss on a sony body or even Ziess with a Canon/Nikon mount would be awsome for me, I think there is an adapter for ZIESS/CANON already on the market so you Canon users can already enjoy it.. I really truely hope they make a Nikon mount Zeiss even if they refuse to make an AF lens...
Fingers crossed

It specifically states "SLR photographers" so it couldn't be the Ikon system since it̢۪s a rangefinder.

how expensive will this be... I can only imagine! 30, 40, 50 year old lenses, some of them sell for $3000! They better have auto-focus too! |

I've read about Zeiss lenses but never having the opportunity to use one the only demonstrations I've seen of them are in images sized for the web. Now I know the difference in an "L" lens on the 1Ds as opposed to the old consumer grade Quantaray f/4.5-5.6 lens on the 10D or 20D firsthand. The quality of the enlargements are often noticeably better to me if not to the average viewers at first glance. If I ever invest the money to try Zeiss glass should I expect to see the same level of difference? |

I'm wondering, what is the general concensus on quality of Zeiss lenses compared to Canon L glass?
I've heard opinions on all ends of the spectrum.
I find it interesting that Zeiss made lenses for Contax and yet I heard from a few guys that Contax made their own very very excellent lenses. Or was that just for their 645 system?
Anyone for a brief bit of education on Zeiss? |

the difference between canon and zeiss really depends on which lenses you're compairing. Zeiss is said to be way better on the wide end, but canon is pretty darn good at the long end. I saw a test were a zeiss and leica beat out a 85mm 1.2L. Pretty impressive. |

I think a lot of the classic optical greats are being forced to create a modern competitive product or face bankruptcy.
Leica hasn̢۪t done well for a couple of years now. I read that there are rumors that they might introduce a 4/3rds DSLR camera (probably under the Panasonic brand name) and lenses at PMA Feb 06.

It appears that they are planning to slowly reveal over 4 weeks, but someone mined the site and the cat is pretty much out of the bag. Looks like Zeiss will be making lenses for Nikon F mount, and initially there seem to be two lenses. No sign of anything for Canon, but then we can already use the old manual focus Zeiss glass. |

Expected price for the 50mm will be USD 500 and USD 1000 for the 85.
When I get a D200 I might be interested in the 50 and trade in my Nikkor AF 50 f/1.4 D for it. It's not easy to manual focus with the D70.
