I was just wondering why this image didn't do well enough to even break my average score. I was really hoping for at least a 5.5 on this one. I'm not sure if the voters actually realized the "technicals" for this image.
To be able to not only capture the flame, the exposure setting needs to be just right since stained glass windows are present in the background. I think the focus needs to be spot on to not blow out the flame and give enough prominence to the windows in the background. I have to admit that the middle flame is a bit blown but I can't help it if I wanted to even out the whole composition.
This image was taken inside a church... a cathedral actually.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

Beat the heck out of my toilet... Not to make a bad pun or anything, but I find this image pretty "uninspired". It's technically competent, but it's compositionally lackluster and has little to hold my interest. I gave it a 5 largely on technical merit.

Maybe if the middle candle wasn't there. It is covering up the window, so that kinda makes the window useless anyways.
Apart from that, there is no way of knowing what your center of interest was. The individual objects are good, but together they don't really make a point. |

Exposure might be perfect but what's up with the composition. Looks like a snapshot.

Hey Rikki, Im hijacking your thread because Im stumped also! I dont know all the technical stuff but I thought this was pretty good. The candles are sharp and the background is slightly blurry. The flames arent upright but how much can I control the wind! Anyway, I didnt get many comments so I would appreciate anything. :)

BEFORE YOU READ ON..."THIS IS MY OPINION ONLY AND COULD VERY WELL BE WRONG SO PLEASE DON'T TAKE IT AS ME KNOWING WHAT YOU DID WRONG AND YOU SHOULD DO IT THIS WAY"...THANK YOU
I think the comments you did get kind of say it all, it is difficult to tell what is going on even with reading the title.
It is a technically a pretty good image but I think a little faster exposure would have helped the flames BUT your background is already hard to distinguish (I'm actually guessing from the title that the candles are in a snow mound or something like that) and a slow shutter would hurt this more.
Maybe paint it with light to highlight the background some but use a short exposure to catch the flames.
It also doesn't hold my interest very long.
Probably would have gotten a 6-7 on my voting scale (see profile for details)

This might help, it might not. Rikki, you mention how hard your photo was to do. Well, to me personally, it doesn't matter how much pain and suffering you went through, it's the final, end result that is presented to me, and that's really what I see.
For example...You go out to buy some camping gear, the machine wont accept your credit card, so you have the cashier put your order on hold, run to the bank, withdrawl the money, go back to the store, only to find out that the cashier has put all your stuff away. You reshop, get everything you need, make your purchase and put everything in your trunk. You realize you have a flat tire, pull everything out of your trunk to get to the spare, change the tire, and finally make it home. You planned on leaving this evening, however, when you get home, your boss calls and you have to come in for an emergency somethingorother. So you leave on your camping trip the next morning. You get lost on the way, and finally end up at a spot that 'will do'. You unpack your camping gear, to realize you forgot the bug spray, and that your new tent is missing 2 stakes. You Find some sticks and make do. The tent is up. You gather some wood, make a small fire, and it starts to rain. not to dampen your spirits, you grab your new fishing pole and head off to the stream to do what you set out to do in the first place...catch some fish.
Hours of fishing, and finally you catch a fish.
And finally my point is...that no matter how hard you tried to catch that fish...I'm not going to eat it.
The photo itself seems to be lacking something that draws me in and holds my attention. Since I am not a religious person, I can share no personal feelings/opinions of the photo. The main subject seems to be the candles, which is good for the challenge, but the glass in the back is too out of focus to really add to the photo. If it had been in focus, then I think the attention would be taken away from the candles, so you made a good choice, but in this case, I find the glass more of a distraction.
Focus on the candles is good. No complaints there. Color is good. Technically, it's an alright photo, just not something I'm drawn to.
Hope this helps. ~Heather~ |

Dear Heather,
That's the best critique I've read in a long time! Good story! :)
