Quick question - is it possible to use the Sony PSP to look at your photo's while out in the field?

Can you connect a camera directly up to it??

Thanks

You can't connect a camera up to it directly, no. The only way to do it is have a camera that uses the memory stick duo (or memory stick, you can buy an adaptor), and put the card in the PSP.

Only other way is to carry a laptop and a multi-card reader and transfer from your camera or camera's card to the memory stick duo.

If you're looking for a great field photo viewer, I'd suggest the Epson P-2000. They released the Epson P-4000 just recently, so I suspect that'll drop the price of the P-2000, and it'll probably be similarly priced to the PSP. The Epson can also play music and video, I believe, although not games ;)

Portable hard drives with batteries and card readers offer much more usability than the PSP.

Be careful how much you pay for a device with an LCD screen. Half the time, those screens don't hold a candle to what is already present on the back of your camera. 235000 pixels in 2.5 inches is pretty decent.

If you don't want the HD, you can also consider picking up a cheap PDA. For the last 2 years or so, the standard has been 320x240 on 3-3.5 inch screens or so. That's about half the resolution of a typical photo print. If you spend a bit more on a VGA enabled device, you can even bring that up to 220 ish DPI, with an admittedly slower performance.

Key performers there would be the Fujitsu Pocket Loox 720 and the Dell x50v. EBay can help you find a really good price on an HP 2210 or 2215 that has a beautiful screen and good, snappy performance without the high resolution though.

Some of these devices can even use USB hosting and run a portable disk as an external drive (with slow USB 1.1 transfer speeds).

No HD, but you can really get a good look at your picture. I've done this more than a few times with my little Acer n10 and use a little Acer specific photo program that is very handy, allowing me to zoom up to 400% and move around the picture for really decent loupe type abilities on the road. It cost about the same as my portable HD.

PM me if you like that idea and I can give you some ideas.

The Epson P-2000's LCD screen is utterly fantastic. Absolutely no issues at all.

Have you seen a PSP? Games and films look absolutely unbelievable! I can't believe there are any other devices with comparable screens. Shame it's too unwieldy to get photos on it.

I put photos on mine all the time, but I have a multi-card reader that I just slip the card into. It's more an after-processing photo album type thing than it is a field viewer.

You're right though, the screen is unbelievable.

I still want the Epson so I have something to dump to in the field.

Yeah, I've seen the PSP, and Yeah, I totally agree that the screen is totally amazing.

I just find mucking about with intermediate Sony (not to mention 50% more expensive) media irritating.

It's easy enough to put photos on the card though.

It's also significantly bulkier.

I had not actually seen the epson p2000. It's a really awesome device. 640x480 and 260,000+ colours. The Fujitsu Loox has less colours at 65,536 on its 640x480 screen.

Thanks for the headsup on that product, it looks totally awesome, if a tad costly. (the loox doesn't have a HD, but it has a USB host to control one if needed and has a mess of other functionality that I personally use a lot. It currently is selling for 15 dollars more than the epson p2000.)

Because of the HD built in, I'd have to say the Epson looks like the best way to go for most others though.

I have an iPaq HX4700 and transfer pictures across to that. The screen is 640x480 and a perfect size to have a quick look at pictures. It also has the added benefits of the Pocket PC software. On a recent 6 week overseas trip, it was great to see pictures on the train travelling back from outings to Florence, Pisa, Siena, Paris etc. Then to kill time you could play games, listen to music or do some writing etc. I certainly wouldn't look at a 320x240 at all having owned several ipaqs. They are nice screens until you zoom in to see a picture. Nothing beats the resolution on the HX4700.
