I was just looking through the comments that arnit received for his excellent football shot this week. I happened to notice that he had marked every single one as "Helpful" including one that just said "10."
Now, I think arnit can mark whatever he likes, and I am not picking on him -- he was just handy as the example. But surely this kind of marking makes the "helpful" percentages absolutely meaningless in any real sense. I believe this was a useful piece of coding by D&L but it has been made valueless by indiscrimiate use. Shame.

those people balance out the others who never mark any comment as helpful no matter how inspired! |

I don't mark all my comments helpful. Also, I see lots of people who don't mark ANY of them useful, so yes, the value is somewhat useless. Someone can put =5 on 200 photos and get 140 usefuls, where as someone who takes a lot of time to make thoughtful comments on photos doesn't get as many usefuls cause he didn't make as many comments. But that doesn't mean that he is less helpful than the guy saying =5. In fact, I find him to be MORE helpful. Way more helpful as a matter of fact. Just go with your own flow. Everyone is different. Some people think the pats on the back are useful, and that's just fine. They are in a way. Helpful to boost ones ego. But not helpful to ME, who would really like to improve.

yes, it's a meaningless stat SOMETIMES. But at 64% helpful, and knowing that 5% mark it always helpful and 5% never helpful, I give myself the idea that I'm 59/90% helpful. I would rather that, then say 12%. I like to know that the middle 90 (or 70 or 80) percent of the people give a rat's butt what I say than to think I AM just wasting my time around here. We all make jokes about our time spent pressing refresh, but we don't REALLY want to just WASTE time.

I think a button for an unhelpful comment would be good. PhotoSig has a +1, 0 and -1 system which works OK. Everyone can rate a comment, not just the photographer. |

It really doesn't bother me to see someone mark "nice shot" or "good" or anything like that as helpful. When I get comments like that, it makes me go "Hmmm, I did something they liked, but I must have not had enough WOW to make them leave more of a comment."
Granted, I would like to know what it was about the shot that made them like it (or not), but given the number of entries, I'm just happy someone took the few seconds it took to type that.
The same goes for just leaving a numerical value. If someone says, "10" I think "Cool. I have made a picture that appeals to some part of the general population. If it just says "5" I think, "Well, not bad, but I didn't do something quite right."
Yes, this means that I am putting "words in others mouths." but that is why I can see these things as helpful, even if they are not an in depth critique discussing the finer points of my shots. After all it does say "COMMENTS" not "CRITIQUES."
