Staples has PNY 1 gig compact flash cards on sale for $59.00. The 512 is on sale too, but it was the 1 gig that got my attention. I don't know anything about PNY as a brand, but I thought I'd pass it along. I can fill my my 512MB card in about 15 minutes depending on what I'm doing. |

Wait until you start shooting RAW. Less then 100 shots per 1GB.

What is RAW and why doesn't my camera already do it? We have a Costco, but I've never been in it. |

RAW should be an option like large, medium, small fine., normal, compressed...
aka - Read the Manual!

RAW is also called a digital negative. Basically it's is a format that doesn't use in-camera settings to process your picture. Additional information may be had in overblown areas that you can bring out in processing.
It is memory hog, so it's not good not to have lot's of memory cards or a digital wallet device. One of the main reason people use it is so they can get the correct white balance after taking the shot and processing them in a RAW convertor program.
Takes quite a bit of processing so it's definitely not for the lazy :( to make a RAW file perfect but you have more infomation in the file so you have more leeway.
Most people will shoot weddings in RAW, but not sports because it slows down your camera.

Your camera does shoot raw, as I have the same camera and shoot raw all the time. You need to press the middle button on the left of the camera in the back. You can then chose what type of file you get. Eithe hq, shq, tiff, raw or combinations. Raw will eat up alot of your cf card at once. I can get about 150 raw files or if I shoot in SHQ I can get 350 or so. Raw gives a ton more adjustments and the Olympus Master that came with your software will let you fix lots of stuff that you otherwise couldnt. Or at least not as easily.

Your camera does do RAW, it's the Olympus version of RAW called an ORF.
And your Olympus Master software can convert and adjust it..
Even has a plug in for Photoshop on Olympus site.
They are VERY big files..

HA! Dream on!!! Seriously though, you know the E-300 has come down A LOT in price, right? I saw it at Circuit City today for $550. I've seen it on Ebay for as little as $400. I would refer you to Glenn's Fair Price in Harrisonburg, because they do lay-aways, but 1) I'm pretty sure you don't live anywhere near Harrisonburg, 2) I bought his last E-300. I told a lady at Circuit City today that my only regret is that Olympus just doesn't have the wide selection of lenses that Cannon and Nikon do. |

Can you provide a link? I have PS CS which is fine with E-300 ORFs, but It doesn't support my new E-500 (I don't want to install or use Olympus' software). Currently i'm using ADobe's DNG converter to convert the E-500 ORFs to DNGs. |

Infortunately to upgrade camera and lens firmware you have to install the Olympus Master software. But from there you also get the Photoshop plug in... |

I think what I need to do is buy an extra 1 GB card and tape it to the bottom of my camera like a spare key hidden under the bumper of a car.
It has been an issue enough times that my 5-year-old is trained to ask, "Is the card in?" before we do something... |
