Hey, I've got a question.

I've got Photoshop 7.0 on my desktop. I don't have the CD. Is there a way to zip/copy/burn/anything-at-all so that I can install it on my laptop?

Or is Photoshop so protected nowadays that it's impossible?

Any help is appreciated!

How was PS 7 installed in the first place? Was it from a download or from a CD? Either way you need to use the original package to install it on your laptop. Installing most programs is more than just copying and pasting some files.

In a word no. When you install a program it weaves itself into many places including your registry. So each install is unique to each machine.

You can only do this by installing the software. Once installed it can not be "copied" to another computer.

But u can share it via your network, so u can open it on your Laptop.

Other than having the original CD (or other install media) the only other option is if both 'pooters are running XP, you may be able to MOVE the application over a network connection. Probably doesn't help, since you'd ideally want to use it in both places.
Another alternative is to contact Adobe for replacement media. Assuming your license is legal, that is a viable option.
If you cannot avail yourself of replacement media, I'd suggest buying a (previously unregistered) version off ebay... be careful there, make sure it has not been previously registered!
One final option, install GIMP on the laptop, that's what I currently have on my work laptop, and it is working fine.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

I originally installed photoshop via a very ill-legal download from a friend, which is why I'm cd-less. I know, I'm not proud of it!

This interests me! I would be able to open it, while connected to a network (I'd have to CREATE that network first), but I wouldn't be able to have Photoshop on the laptop always, huh? Is there a way to install it thru the network? I'm really not smart on this sort of stuff!

Ahhh, you have answered my questions here about the network. Thank you! GIMP is free, right, or atleast cheap? I am addicted to photoshop, but am sick of being tied to it at home. The prospect of me buying any software at that price is just...uhuhnope. I will take a look at ebay, though honestly, ebay freaks me out. It's so sketchy!

Thanks so much for your help!

GIMP is free and very powerful. Not an exact swap by any means, but I'll ne'er be able to afford an uptodate PS, so GIMP it is for me.

It can be done easily...

BUT it is not legal to do so. you may have only one copy. You must have the original CD (you know. proof you boght it)

PS 7 installs itself in a subdirectoy. drag and drop that subdirectory and it will run from the new location. This works with all the older adobe software. This is how sotware is SUPPOSED to work, according to MS - software that spreads itslef al lover teh hard drive like a bad weed causes all sorts of issues regarding dupicate file names, file versions, etc.

It might matter on how it was first installed. I have personally moved 5.5 and 7 form one HD to another when upgrding HDs - faster and easier then reinstalling everything. My current 'puter is on it's third C drive and second OS.

PS CS stopped this.

Does anyone know off hand if you can acquire a second license of a legal copy to put on a second machine and the cost?

See, I don't have the CD...which is why I'm having such issues to begin with. It's also why the whole notion of "reinstall" is just not applicable. But say I did create a network between desktop and laptop - would I be able to do the whole drag/drop dealie? While I'm not a real 'puter geek, I am a fast learner :) :)

There is also the possibility that when I go down to DC next week for christmas, I can hit up my aunt's company software collection and see what they've got hehehe :)

Thanks for your input, Prof!

It does this even better on a Macintosh. Adobe actually recognizes the reality of modern working conditions, and the current license should allow you to legally install on one desktop and one laptop unit -- they are mainly concerned that you are not running the two copies simultaneously.

I work at a service bureau which has a contract with Adobe -- they don't really care how many machines the software's installed on, but it will detect a running copy over the network and refuse to launch. Most of the other desktop publishing programs work the same way.

Is it a legal copy? if so,you should be able to purchase a replacement CD from Adobe. If not, you're SOL.
