If I understood everything he wrote (French is not my best foreign language) he had only translated the Title of the challenge using a tourist type dictionary. So in it it describes the phrase "Say Cheese" as someone wanting to take your picture, so smile a little. I wrote the challenge details to him in French afterwhich he wrote back stating he now understood the challenge and would pay attention to the descriptions more in the future.
Not sure why it took French to explain, he seems to know English fairly well. |

JUST in case others want to read what was said on the actual and first thread on this subject, you can go to the "CHEESE" thread to catch up.
I guess there is no choice but to continue here on this "pick the cheese" thread now. I wonder? Was the "7 hour" thread locked too? I will have to now go there and see, since that is on the same subject as well.

I'm too lazy to go through this entire thread to see if this has been covered, but are some of the "cheese" entries the most disgusting pictures ever submitted to DPC?
I'm not talking about meeting the challenge, I'm talking about gross and horrible!!!!!!
I usually like gross, but some of them are just hideous.
I just glanced through the thumbnails and wow!
I think I'll go and cancel my membership right now.
Well, maybe I won't go that far and I am only half kidding.....but only half! |

I agree. Hideous was a word that definately came to my mind when I saw them. Did they make me smile? NOPE. They made me go "EWWWWWW" + score low + move on quickly, and in that order. LOL...

fotomann, are you out there? Have you found where we are to continue yet? LOL....
I guess we can continue either here or on the 7-hour thread now.
Anyway, I will tell you I'm getting a bit concerned now. My scores have dropped a "bit", so it must be this cheese/smile thing I would imagine. I see you agreed as well that cheese should be in the photo, as in physical cheese? I wanted to tell you I agreed with you before we were cut off.

I wish they'd learn that sooner than later....
sadly they need to rip apart and tear down other peoples work and creativity

The thread develops a little heat of academic points being driven down like nails and as a happy ending the pedagogic group will vote down the outcast and the outcast will vote down the pedagogic group.
I believe that the final score will tell the story. What point or advantage is gained by enraging any member with pedagogic comments. Better to vote and move on. In all challenges it appears that 75 percent of all images fit. It is better to concentrate on leaving comments that help the member photographically. There will always be some members that misread the instruction, they pay for it and their score will tell them more than the advise of those that know better. Also keep in mind that the challenge descriptions are translated by those that may not be fluent in English.
A lot of this energy may be put to better advantage. |

Hey! My first time ever for a "favorite". Someone actually chose my Cheese photo as their favorite!??? Maybe I should start selling prints now and doing more cheese shots! LOL.... I have been thinking about selling prints, but was going to wait till next years new camera buy first. Maybe I won't bother just to see what happens. I don't know. It is something I have been back and forth about lately.
Anyway, lots of wonderful comments. It is sweet to see that you did make someone smile with your photography.

Even with a topic as limited as cheese there is always the ability for variance and creativity.
I've seen a cheese henge, I've seen the great escape once done with sugar cubes and pouring sugar now done with cheese blocks and melted cheese. Sure, there were quite a few computer mice with cheese shots. To be expected.
But I think there is, even in limited subject matter, diversity.
Hey look at the rubber ducky challenge which had like 5-6 criteria and dictated everyone use the same criteria of "Rubbery Ducky, 5 green grapes, blue background, feature water, and use a specific aperture range." The results, (althought they all featured those) were quite dynamic. |

You made me look. LOL...
Those rubber ducky shots are amazing! Nice work there. I don't understand "three light sources" but I think the entries were so great!

This is off-topic for this thread, but this just struck me: Ack for the non-English speakers in the Visual Puns challenge! Either they do one in their own language which most people will not "get", or they do one in English which is not their first language. I wonder if that occurred to the site council when they came up with the challenge?

Yes, a bit off topic...but related in a way.
I think this site and its members are very considerate of non-native English speakers. However, I don't see anything wrong with offering the occasional challenge which allows us to have fun with the English language. There are other challenges that are in some way prejudiced against "classes" of users--bokeh comes to mind. |

Given the length of threads about the puns challenge, I'm guessing many native English speakers are going to have a hard time as well. :) |

Is it just me, or are all of the low balling voters out tonight?
I woke up this morning to a nice high score. Through out the day it waivered but stayed pretty stagnant. Come about noon today and onward, for every high vote I got 4 low ballers that followed and this was consistant throughout the day. One high, 4 low ballers, one high, 4 low ballers. For once I have actually tracked this scoring as I haven't the others, and I am finding what is happening a bit odd.
Here is another oddity. At voter 179, my score said one thing. I hit the update button about 20 seconds later, and it was still at voter 179, BUT my score changed? Either scores change with no voting even being done..LOL..or it was a percentage calculation roll over. Not sure, but it is awfully strange to watch your scores change even when no voting had taken place.
Rose
PS: fotomann, if this low balling continues, you may end up with me sending you a ribbon after all! LOL...

Ahhhh, that is something I hadn't thought of. Someone who already voted going back an rethinking it. Well, that explains at least one oddity. Thanks!

Not necessarily rethinking. Some people use the first pass to bucket votes at say 4, 5 and 6 then go back and redistribute. |

This is art; cheese can have different meanings to an artist. Depends on what you want to present. Just give your comments and help other to learn. I don't really think it was a Kraft commercial. Thanks for having fun. |

I voted on 100% and commented on 59. Sorry for those I missed in the comments. I've got big projects to complete this weekend but maybe I can squeeze some more comments in before the challenge ends. :) |

It was just a joke, but thanks for thinking of me. I'm getting all warm and fuzzy inside.
