Great point! Well said. ;^) |
OK ;-) And if amongst the things you like there's also DPChallenge? And if you like to put passion in all the things you like so that you always have the illusion that you can improve a bit of it?

I suspect this was an especially confusing challenge topic for people who don't speak English well or at all. "Say Cheese" is a rather odd expression after all. Sounds like that's what's going on with the "small smile" commenter. |

Myself and a few others have also received the same comment - verbatim. |

Improve - yes, fine - go ahead. Seems to be more complaining however than suggesting improvement. ;^) As for the idea of clarifying challenge descriptions I'm pretty sure that's been batted about numerous times (almost on a weekly basis).
As for leaving it alone... Let's leave it like it is....

And what about that comment?
1. There is no such thing as THE dictionary.
2. Which dictionary did this commentor consult?
3. I have not found this phrase of definition in the dictionaries I consulted.
4. If I had, it probably wouldn't have said "small" smile since the usual phrase is "Big Cheesy Grin"
5. I suspect this "dictionary" is actually a foreign language to English glossary and phrase book....Is this what we are to go by for our challenges?
Read the challenge description. Re-read the challenge description. Discuss it amongst yourselves. Enter what you believe. Then vote with your heart and mind.

Problem : not all voters read the description of the challenges as much as the photographers do ... so ... we can whine and complain about DNMC issues all we want and it won't change a thing. |

Details of the challenge description are listed at the top of the voting page for all to see when you go in to vote.
edit to add - guess it still doesn't mean they read it. ;^)

I may be missing something, but after reading all the posts in this thread it seems to me that it's the voters who are complaining and not so much the photographers receiving the comments. The title of the thread refers to those who entered photos which some believe do not fit the "Challenge Details" description....no?

it's worth mentioning that the majority of challenge topics AND their descriptions in the database come directly from the populace at large here. neither the admins nor the sc sit around and try to come up with vague descriptions that will cause conniptions. y'all have yourselves to blame!
might i make a plug that we're always looking for good challenge topics WITH well-thought-out descriptions? if you think it's so easy to do, try suggesting a few! it's a lot tougher than you think. [/quot

This is a very good point. Look at the mess we are all in. Laws are passed and somewhere the loophole is found, yet these laws are written by legal experts. The tax code is a perfect example starting with the admentment where it takes its authority. It states that all income shall be liable to tax. Notice that income is not defined. This has created a flurry of suits because wages are not considered income as they are a return for labor performed different from income from stock and bonds and interest account. Of course, the way this country was founded income tax is illegal because it is a graduated tax. A legal tax is a tax that is administered equal to everybody. But now the water is so muddled that intelligent people actually believe Big Brother and all the hog wash that comes from washington.
The point is that we do not want lawyers to write the challenges for two reasons: the first is that the challenge will be presented as a desertation and second is that they actually expect a high salary to mess things up. And then, there may still remain a loophole.
So, we take challenges as they are presented and then we handle the definition in the best way we know. Always keep in mind that humor, irony, parody and the art of the pun can drive a steak through the cold logical stance of the challeng'e definition. Again, those that stray too far will pay the price and there is no need to rub their faces in their final score.
My attitude is first to have a good time here. Not to take myself too seriously and to give some slack were required. Many challenges will be a challenge to understand but then it is not a big deal. I am here to see the flow of creativity and about 80% of the entrants usually remain within the stated definitions and there have been some outstanding images that the author's of the challenge never envisioned. |

Funny you mention that. I have friends who got royally screwed by the IRS. They were a handful who got !@#$% over by a poorly written law. He worked as a programmer during the .com BOOM. And had stock options valued at nearly a million $. But never sold them. Shortly there after the .com BUST arrived and they were worth about $1,000.
Anyways, there was a law (since revoked by Congress - but they did not revoke it retroactively as they should have) that allowed the IRS to tax him on the options. So he wound up owing the IRS taxes for a million dollars he never actually earned. The IRS of course demanded it all...NOW!!!!!!!
I believe they had to take a mortgage on their house to pay nearly $80,000 in taxes. They went to court over it and won, sort of. The IRS was ordered to give back the money, and they're doing so over a 20 yr period. (Which as we all know...in 20 yrs a $1,000 will be worth much much less in value. Nor, does it account for the interest payments that they must pay for the 2nd mortgage. Talk about being !@#$%'d by poor legal wording.)

I think I am going to join the small, but growing crowd, who thinks there should be no secondary description. If the challenge were only "Say Cheese", there would be far less of this nazi mentality and more room for creativity. Sure you could still DNMC, but less so and it would be easier to have your own take.
Challenges like "4-5 AM" could have simple secondary descriptions like "time stamp will be verified", but leave the title of the theme as the only descriptor. |

Hardly. Half the group would assume it's a portrait challenge, and the other half would shoot dairy products (with both sides complaining about the other). We've had no-description challenges before, and it doesn't seem to make much difference. |

Shannon is dead right on this.
Go back to the very beginning of DP Challenge. This argument has been going on for what..almost 4 years. Everybody has THE answer..if only everyone else was smart enough to listen to them.
Frankly, all the controversy and bickering is a good thing. If I were Drew or Langdon I would love the fact people get so bent out of shape over these challenge descriptions...it's what art is all about..the debate!! |
