Maybe people need to realize that you have to drop a few dollars on PC/MAC hardware as well as all those lenses everyone keeps raving "ooh, i just got a..." You need a monitor as well as a lens.
Like I said, i figured people who love digital photography would be more concerned about actually having equipment to edit those pictures on. I am wrong, as I usually end up being on this site. Is okay.

I think everyone should get dual 19" flat screens like me. I have no problems finding space for tool bars :D |

Glad you mentioned that, I was afriad of more flames. You could prolly get a good/decent 19 inch for cheaper than that used on e-bay...

I wish dude, it then becomes a desk space elitism issue for me. You obviously have more than I do.

My thoughts exactly about investing on better hardware to edit/view the digital photos. Its almost like printing photos on normal paper. |

Get an external monitor and a real keyboard and mouse?
Honestly, I can't understand how you guys edit photos with such small resolutions at hand, I can barely fit a pic a with all the Photoshop toolbars in with 1152x864, I usually up the res to 1280 when my wife isn't looking :O) |
I do edit on my desktop computer (at 1600x1200), but that's not my normal computer for web browsing. I enjoy the portability of the notebook computer and use that for most of my surfing, including DPC. That said, our concern is how people are browsing the site and most reliable statistics show that a majority of web users are running at 1024x768. One would expect a bias toward higher resolution on a photography site, but that bias is a few percentage points and not orders of magnitude. It's simply not realistic for us to expect users to change their resolution settings just for DPC, much less to replace their hardware for that purpose. If we're incredibly lucky, maybe 5% of the users would do that. The other 95% would walk.

This reminds of the old photography discussions trying to convince people that there $20 tripod they used with there $1000 lens was worthless and not allowing them to produce the quality the lens was capable of. |

That kinda kills the portability factor, and thus the point of the laptop, don't you think?

BTW, I'm running at 1600 x 1200 on a 19" monitor. Now it's not a pro version so it's probably not up to snuff.

Docking station for serious work? Laptops are not for editing contrast / brightness on photos. |

don't forget about the people who will leave because of a change.
increased image size will turn into wanting an increase in file size. This will result in higher membership cost to cover the additional cost for the growing bandwidth demands. You will see people slowly departing DPC because they can justify the cost to renew their membership. I for one can not justify anything more than $25 a year for this site. I can certainly afford, just cant justify the expense.
I aint clicking on google ads to generate revenue so people can have 800xwhat ever image sizes either
maybe they can take a larger cut of the profits from prints at DPC Prints to cover the cost. Im sure print sellers will love that one

Well I guess its concluded that the site wont change the 640 pixel limitation. Maybe in a few years time when everybody has upgraded their hardware. Me thinks this is a losing debate for those who wish to see higher resolution submission in the challenges here on this site.
I'm resting my case. The defendant wins.

It's a known practice for amatuer photogs to spend thousands on gear, and $20 on a tripod that won't support the camera sufficiently. Not that everyone needs a tripod like mine or is crazy enough to spend that kind of money, but they need a decent tripod for support. |

I don't see why a higher res image that you have to click on the 640px image is out of the question. Then only those who want to see the higher res version will click. |

I'm noob about tripods. But please, do correct me if I'm wrong. I'm going to get a tripod soon, my camera is rather light. As long as I can get a tripod that can support my camera's weight (and probably my future camera's weight) am I gonna be fine? Thanks. I'm just not ready to spend 100 bucks on a tripod just yet. Would a tripod wobble or shake under the wind? Will it affect the steadiness? please share your experience. Thanks again.
sorry for the OT

All voters should be looking at the same images when they score the challenges.
