I did some family shots for one of our pastors yesterday. Here are a few and HERE are the rest of them.
I made a homemade diffuser for my flash, and I think it worked fairly well. I'd like some opinions on the portraits. You know how it is, when you've looked at some for a long time. I need fresh eyes to see if they are okay. Thanks.

I'm sure he'll be pleased.
You could try narrowing depth of field (or post precessing) to keep the backgrounds from being so prominent. Also, all the pics look like you aimed down on your subjects. You could try setting your camera lower to look up a bit (to remove the expanse of carpeting) in the pics.
JMHO... |

Thanks for the feedback. That's just what I need. I did lower the camera quite a bit, but I agree I think in some it needed lowered a bit more.
Are the clarity and color (skin tone etc.) okay? |

I think they turned out really well with the exception of the dof. The backgrounds are distracting to me. Maybe if there wasn't so much in the background or it was blurred a little bit. |

Just about all of these were shot at 2.2, which is the lowest (widest) the 717 will go, I believe...so I'd have to blur it in post processing. I might work on that part of it. Thanks! |

Hey...thanks for having a go at it. To my eye, that blur looks much too overdone and not natural. I do get the idea and have been playing around with it. That's good for having a rug rat crawling all over you :) How old is your daughter? |

I think the background looks great in these shots. Sometimes it is ok to show a background especially when it is used as part of a prop which to me the fireplace and the tree are both used as a prop. Very warm feeling photos. I wonder if you could have used a faster shutter speed..seems a bit blurry or fuzzy to me unless it is just caused from resizing. |

Oh the joys of having the 717 and doing indoor photography...I couldn't go any faster really. As it was, I had this set on 200 iso (400 is incredibly noisy in the 717) with a wide open aperture and used the flash. No studio lights, no dslr. The fireplace is in a windowless room, so no natural light. :( The larger files do look better than what is here, but certainly could be improved with better equipment I think. Any suggestions for increasing the speed that I have not mentioned please share! :) I know they will not order above an 8x10, so I think these should be alright.
Thanks for the comments, Soni |
